Townsville LR Weekend

Post by albow »

Hi All

Today was day one for our LR weekend which was the 550yd BR match. All up nine shooters were there with a range of conditions that were from relatively calm to blustery with rain. The mirage was reasonably friendly enabling pretty good sighting and spotting most of your bullets on the targets. Full results are in the competition pages however a quick rundown:

In HG group and score aggs went to JR with a 2.328" & 202 and he also got small group of 1.679" and single high score card of 53.

For LG group and score aggs went to myself with a 2.992" and 200 along with small group of 1.777" and single high score card of 53.

Easter commitments kept a few of the normal local shooters away however they should be there tomorrow for the 1000yd.

Howdy All

Today saw us shooting 1000yd as the second day of the our LR Weekend in Townsville. Conditions were again like your typical Melbourne day with us having every condition possible with sunshine, overcast conditions, rain squalls, blustery winds and some mild mirage thrown in for good measure. Having said that there were some good results posted by the shooters over the day.

In HG group agg went to JR with a 6.923" and score agg went to Jeff H with a 175.1. Small group and single high score went to JR with 6.324" and 93.1.

In LG Tony Z took out the day with group agg, score agg, small group and single high card of 5.098", 96.2, 4.852" and 49.2 respectively.

The full results can be seen on the competition results page.

Just thought i would throw this pic up of the weekend. Shows Jack just a short while after JR shot. A storm had passed through dumping wind and rain right on the start of the commence fire after the 6 minute sighting period. JR had already put down his 7.3/93.x in the rough stuff.
So with clean crisp air with virtually no wind for the next detail, one would expect a small group. Well unfortunately for Jack it went 18 inches whereas his first group in the swirl went half of that at 9 inches. If ever there was a candidate for a stretcher tube, this barrel is it. A drop of 5 degrees temp, up 20 or 30% in humidity and the group goes to crap. Trevor on the bench to the right shot his 284 in the same conditions and added 2 inches to his first group for a 9.xxx in near ideal conditions. Just goes to show that to shoot the real small groups all the planets need to align.

In all the years i have shot on our range, i have never seen the flags like this. And probably never will again.
As to what the groups did, well Trev went vertical and Jack went round and open and big and way way out of the linear spread of groups in the quarter inch at a 100 yards area his rifle was during testing. From quarter minute to one and three quarter minute of angle in 900 yards of cool, clean crisp and still air. A thousand yards, the great equalizer, or humbler. Either way, good to see a new shooter enter the world of "why".

Loose Cannon Bodine.

A couple of piccy's from last weekend at the 1000yd line.

These were taken during one of the downpours and if you look at the second photo of Trevor I think the expression on his face says it all as the shooters couldn't actually see their targets
