Light Guns & STATS

Post by a.JR »

Hi All, Just revisited the stats i did up recently with everyone's thoughts centered on recent wins with the little 6mms and more importantly Light Guns .. Although all ranges give different outcomes on different days , i personally think that a 230 score is where the line is for "top outcome in FLY ".. In the records i have available there has 29 scores posted above 230 since FLY started ..
1 for a 6mm
4 for a 6.5mm
8 for a 7mm
16 for a 30 cal
For Light Gun the score is 4 wins
and in Heavy Gun it's 25..
Big question is "will this change in the future ", light guns in the US at the 600 yd distance have been dominating .. Will this turn around in AUS..What say ya'all..JR..Jeff Rogers

Hate to admit it but I think the HG will continue to be the dominate class mainly due to being able to send those big 30 and up bullets down range without kicking the shit out of the firer. Being able to see the bullet holes is a huge advantage, yes the smaller caliber can run with the 30's in accuracy and ballisitic effeicency BUT it can't compete with being able to see bullet holes, don't know what the conditions were like in Vic but at the ACT this year I was able to bullets holes almost all day which does help.

Just had a look at SOFY on the actbenchrest site. LG is very competive again this year :D

And lets face it most HG's sould beat a LG . The way my rifle jumps and bucks on the bags its a wonder I get any shots near each other.

Are we going to see you two at B/Bay ?

arra,

Mate thats a big call
And lets face it most HG's sould beat a LG .
I never knew that shooting a HG gave you better wind reading ability.   I will have to build another one and see if it doubles my wind reading ability.

Yes the HG does not jump so much as a LG but that is why you will find the classes are divided as much by calibre as weight. The simple fact is if you want to shoot a big 7mm or 30 magnum you just won't last if you shoot it in a LG ... ooo that would be a LONG day.

The LG class is where you find calibres that you can shoot without be extremely fatigued after 3 - 4 targets.ing

These by nature tend to be the smaller calibres (308 excluded) which as Matt rightly said have the one major issue of making seeing bullet holes very difficult as conditions fall off.

I have not seen a HG built on a 6mm I believe as you just don't need to (Ackley Improved - Trevor Bent is the only LG shooter I know who is thinking of a HG in 6mm and I don't know that he ever will actually do it)

Col at the end of the day you put bullets on target because you pay attention to detail in prep (loading etc) and can read the wind .. if I added 20 lbs to your stock yes it will sit better but will your prep improve or will you pick a wind change any better :?: :?: :?:

I have just built a LG in 308 (and 6x47 pending aquiring a barrel) no need forthe extra weight with these cals therefore the LG was an easy choice.

The nut behind the bolt is the biggest variable on any rifle. Keep your powder dry.

A 6mm Heavygun sounds intersting.... but I would be building one only to 22lbs so it keeps within the F Class weight limit.

The caliber I would use is 6X47L, or just for something different a 6X44 wildcat, still using the 6.5X47L brass.

After reading the stats on the 6X47L, I feel that it really only has a slight edge on a 6mmDasher however, so maybe a 6mmVias would be the ticket for making quick tomato stakes.

I really do not want to get into the 5" wide forend heavyguns, as then I will need a new rest, and gear to suit!

Rinso, MBR style laminate stock, 1.45 tapered to 1.25 at muzzle 30" long, Stiller Python action, chambered in 6mm... GO for it!

Hi Kenny , I will be in Bris on The 27th of may weekend for thier 1K match, can leave the gun an reloading gear there.. My boy is in transport in Bris but can't get free stuff out of QLD.. You will only need 30 cartridges anyhow as the sequence is 1 only sighter and then 4 or 5 in the 10 ring each target.. All you have to do is trust the 1st sighter and then duplicate the same flags ,it's easy, mind you u will have to recalculate the drift from your 30 B R........ It will have to be back in TSV by the 19 June for our 1000yd match..JR..Jeff Rogers

kenny,

Bring the 30BR down mate, Batemans Bay is downhill that should help you get the velocity up a bit. Throw in a 22 and your set.

Don't worry about aJR's HG you couldn't lift it up.

Be good to see you their

cheers
