Case Trimmers and Lyman quality

Hey lads,
I have a lyman deluxe reloading kit, which ive had for about a year now. Since then the scales have gone bust, and now my case trimmer has shat itself. It seems the locking device which locks the case while its being trimmed had become loose. Essentially, if the case doesn't lock then i cant trim. Any Ideas?? Anyone had problems like this??

I must say that the lyman deluxe press is very good. However the scales and trimmer have performed very poorly. In comparison i have an RCBS chargemaster and RCBS case cleaner which have been excellent.

I have a Lyman universal accutrimmer that has trimed a LOT of cases. Except for wearing out a few cutters (i should get a carbide one) its been fine. My Lyman scales are very old, bought cheap s/hand and never had a drama with them.

i have a universal trimmer too. bit of a pta changing between different cases but has worked fine. cranking the handle sucks and i have to watch that the nylon sleeve for the cutter doesn't come out or it stuffs the trim depth.

overall its worked really well.

hey andrew,

with the universal trimmer how do you trim your 204 cases?? because the pilot things are not the right size for 204. I took the smallest one and grinded it down a bit, maybe thats why mine isnt locking.

G'day Louie,

I have both the Lyman conventional balance beam and an electronic set, both work extremely well.

As for case trimmers, I use both the Lee (hand trimmers) and have the Hornady Cam-Lock.

I would inquire about a replacement under warranty.

I hate the Lyman Universal trimmer with a passion ... but it has a few redeeming features hence I keep hold of it. But the Forster does the vast majority of my trimming.

i got my smith to turn one down, i used one of the big cals cos i use the smaller ones. i think its turned to about .202-.203 but take a sized case with you and make it so you can turn the pilot in the case mouth with your fingers or you'll tear the brass inside the necks and that will stuff you accuracy wise.

that's the only shit about lyman. they may have a pilot for it now but i got in when there was still stuff all 20cal wise. never looked back though.

I had to turn one down to 20 cal for my Hornady trimer too.

if you want to be serious about your case trimming then you should be pulling out your sinclair catalogue and ordering a Wilson. If you ask along the line at a BR match you'll find more users than non users and they arent that dear. You dont need the micrometer!
