Tony Z wrote:Mick, Dave, i can see both sides in all this and as you both know the reasons why i have stepped sideways on 1K shooting, but not ruled it out completely at this point, i have full intentions of getting to a Nationals. Run it just like Canberra has run their matches at other times when done so in conjunction with the Fly. No major change at all and just state who shot what way. If blind wins or loses or marked wins or looses it will only tell the story of what worked on the day at that range. Nothing more can be taken from it and there is no reason that i could see that there should be a shit fight. Over what? 1K is a long way and it is difficult no matter what you do. If there is a postal out of this event to be sent off to Virginia, simply squad the marked or blind shooters apart so that the blind shooter cannot gain any advantage (questionable) from seeing a marked shooters spotting discs. Simple. This has to be done not for us here but for the authenticity of results sent to Virginia as they will surely question procedure, as they rightly should. If someone wants to argue that point then maybe they should do it here and now where the majority of 1K shooters visit or will visit once word gets around.
Having said this, i think that anyone who opposes the interaction with the US in postal matches because it favors the blind method, and continues to press the complete assimilation at all times of the two methods at the peril of losing something that a small group of hard working competitors have done, they may need to re-evaluate their real reasons for being in the sport. Nationals aside, this goes deeper as we all know and this rivalry is not healthy at this point and has so many parallels to what happened to BR50. Do we all remember what happened to that industry?
Really guys this could go on for years so maybe it is time to remove the emotion and insert the rational thought process and get the Nationals going asap. Everyone there will have a good time and those that wish to boycott it, then that is your choice. Let's not make it a situation of having to have a six pack to get in and a six gun to get out of the after match celebrations
Loose Cannon Bodine.
ps. Mick i am pretty certain you can count on 5 from Townsville for a Nationals
Again I completely agree and this is the kind of result I was hoping for. The more people we have not worrying about how other people want to shoot the 1K, the better. If your opinion on things is the general consensus, then the whole thing is a no brainer. People turn up, shoot in the style they like, and there's no division other than getting blind and marked shooters into the same details as much as possible.
My main concern was that there would be a big division over the two methods being allowed and not divided by class in the overall results. If I'm mistaken there, I'm quite happy about that.
So, how many people would object to it being run in that format?
As I said, I'm in, would be more appreciative if we segregated in the relays between blind and marked, as I have some reservations about result validity if they are mixed.
Hi Guys,
I have not put my two cents worth in about mark v blind, until now. I shoot both and enjoy my long distance shooting.
One thing to be considered I know we are talking about a national event here but all in all doesn't the host club have the final say on what is finally shot on the day.
I agree with Dave, why not just have two class you nominate for whichever class at the start of the competition.
This infighting that we are having here about marked v blind is not doing our sport any favours. I heard this comments from an old shooter, "Shooters are the biggest problem for the sport of shooting." And I would have to attend to agree with him. We have enough of a battle with the do gooders wanting to take our guns off us. We should be doing more to encourage new shooters to the sport and focus our energy together to save our sport.
Mick, if you guys can get a Nationals going down your way, those that come down from Townsville will have no problem with what you have been doing till now. I know that in the past we have drawn a line on this issue of blind and marked shooting. That was more because we had disagreed with the method with which this was introduced and the fact no-one had ever used the option. But i am certain that if anyone came to our range and asked to shoot the marked option, it would be catered for. The important point being that someone actually wanted to shoot 1K with us which does not happen every day and the fact that right now it is in the rule book. Right now i can think of two well known FClass shooters that will if work allows crossover to a 1K match and they may be more comfortable initially with the marked option. One is Rod Davies of this forum and i would like to see him there and catch up since he has left NQ.
To answer directly, no problem with blind and marked together and there should only be a separation while shooting if there is to be a postal included in this event because Virginia will question validity at some point. Other than that, mixed bag and no need for separate prizes/trophies etc. Just record who used what method for future statistical reference so that any shooter can view that information and choose his direction.
Gidday Guys---- I hope this topic doesn't turn into a shitfight- like another topic on this forum. Let's not forget we shoot under an already established set of rules. These rules have options,------- I don't know about you guys -- but I'm all for "pulling the trigger ".
I've just recently purchased 2 expensive target rifles--- and I'm impressed that within a 4 hour drive from Sydney-- I can shoot 1000 yds at least 5-6 times a year. I can then shoot the "Fly "-- which is a measly 500 metres, at least 2 times a year at the Canberra range.
Did it matter that I shot a 560 mm group at 1000 yds?------ did it matter that a shot a 1.6 inch group at the 500m Fly?---- to me all that matters is --- that I'm pulling the trigger, I'm with a top bunch of fellas,-- I'm not at home mowing lawns, and I'm having a ball--- even if I don't hit the target.

I think Canberra, Townsville and Brisbane really need to nominate delegates or something like that, who can discuss the issues on behalf of their respective clubs, attempt to agree on something and present it to their clubs to see if it will fly or not.
Hi Mick
I agree 100% with your statement above and I'm still not sure how but somehow I got wrangled into running the the 1000yd in Townsville so I would be more than than happy to represent the TSV contingent and any of the out of town regulars that shoot with us.
If you can organise someone from the other locations flick me a PM to let me know so we can get things started.
Hi Gents,
Setting aside the classes (marked or blind) issue, the one major factor that we had to consider before offering to host a 1KBR nationals was timing, currently Canberra shoots EVERY Saturday, and we were too late (in about October
09) to be able to book a Saturday for the match.
Currently the Canberra Rifle Club Committee has asked me to provide feedback as to when it would be that we Thousand Yard people would like to run our shoot, then we can organise ourselves into the 10-11 shooting year calendar and not screw things up for the Fullbore guys.
November 2010 is a possibility, however after the Canberra Queens, when we run our usual 1000yds match, most of the Canberra guys are going to be worn out after hosting about 300 shooters, so I am not particularly keen on that time.
Maybe March 2011?
Gotta go, beer to be drunk and Fish and Chips to be consumed here in Wailea, Maui, Hawaii, and the missus is getting cranky I'm surfing the web....
Hello all 1000yd shooters its good to see there is an interest in a national champ shoot -- as you have seen there is a way to suit all the shooters by letting the shooter descide if they want to shoot marked or blind -- so keep up the good work and plan ahead for the first nats in 1000yd -- the sooner the better -- john mc
My clapped out old 6.5 won score shooting blind but didn't even group.
How about we all sit on the line pull the trigger and forget about marked or blind. The biggest challenge is to get an event going, it is a huge commitment by the club members and requires heaps of time.
SO let support whichever club has the highest chance of getting it going and let the results speak for themselves.
A few thoughts on the subjects raised. Continuing with marked or blind, as the shooter chooses, is the only sensble option as any insistence on blind only risks a loss of numbers. At a nationals, running seperate classes is an option but would be over-kill at most normal events. I have shot both ways but currently prefer blind as I am trying primarily for group. Mind you, last time at Canberra in September I won the score agg whilst Ross Hicks (shooting marked) took the group agg - go figure! As I also shoot 500 Fly and both F std and F open I get plenty of long range score shooting so the opportunity to belt down 10 in a fast string is too good to pass up. On the other hand my wife is uncomfortable with the blind method so prefers marked. The current system keeps everyone happy and any change should not be considered. Trying to squad blind and marked seperately should also be left to the discretion of the event organisers as they are the ones who have to do this work.
As for support of a National shoot, I regret that Lee-Anne and I are pretty much all travelled out, these days wishing to go no further north than Sydney. We would obviously support any such event in Canberra.
