1000yd Cartridge Choice!
1000yd Cartridge Choice!
Hi All < Always lots of debate on what cartridge is the best for longrange ..The F/class guys have thier choices ,the 1K benchresters have sometimes a differing view..Questions..If ya had the choice which one would ya pick ?would it be what you have now or something else?.. I have seen an increasing number of shooters just willing to have a go with no real regard to winning ,just interested in competiting..will this effect the choice ??....JR..Jeff Rogers
Idea's
Thanks Shane ,Your thoughts always appreciated..I think you may be close with the 300 if the new 208 Amax is a good as i have heard it is ..This will make it a lot easier for us Aussies..JR..Jeff Rogers...........

At the moment i am sticking with my 7mm STW it works fine for the little bit of 1000 yards i get to shoot, even if i shot a lot of 1000 yard i would be in no hurry to change it .
The only other case i would look at currently would be the 300 win mag ackley imp.
cheers,
Shane

Will be interesting to see what the new Amax's are like, they often start well but after a few batches tend to show some more variation.
Hopefully they will keep on top of things and produce a good projectile.
Has anyone on here given the Sierra 30cal 210gners a good run, what do ya think?
cheers,
Shane

210s
Shane , I speak regularly with Dave Tooley in the states ,he has not long finished a small test at 1K with 210 Smks ,208 Amax (he has had them since OCT last year) and the latest batch of 210 Bergers ..He don't elaborate much ,simply said all three were on a par with each other ,none better none worse ,all shot good groups at 1000yds for comercial bullets ..All would be as close as Fuc. is to swearing in the BC ,his estimate in Non BS BC is approx .630 (Ohler 43s at 1000yds).. 2 guns were used an 11 twist and his 12 twist, both top shelf Heavy Guns .. Both shot approx the same group size (5s/6sand 7s .. The only stand out was the bullet i use in the 12 twist.. In regard to the 210 Smk i don;t think it has been well recieved because it is dearer than the Berger ,which is the projectile to beat in the boattail stuff right accross the US.. After testing the 208 he ordered another lot of BIBs, but at least he knows for his 11 twist customers..JR..Jeff Rogers.............

aJR,
In heavy gun I would not trade the 300 without very good reason I have had too much success with it, you know what they say 'if it ain't broke ..'
I have an urge to build a 6.5 - 06AI or 6.5 x 55 AI for 1000yd but am also looking at a few other options in the 6.5 class as well. We will see what develops.
I will continue to use 185 Lapua's until the 210's are proven, the 208's I tend to agree with shane they seem to let the quality control slide as time passes.
cheers

F Class and BR have very different needs and weight limits, so here goes for a 1000BR HG I don't think you can go past a 300ACK or similar, for FC and LG, with no brake, 6.5x284 or similar(55AI, 57AI etc) and the 7mm in 284/ 280 and the AI version, but if you get a good day (don't see to many of them @ Canberra) the 6BR and the bigger 6mm's can't be overlooked. There's really too many choices especially in the FC & LG, all have pro's and con's at the moment there really isn't THE CALIBER which IMO what makes longrange shooting so much more appealing than SR BR.

6.5s
Hi Matt and Dave , my guess is that your correct in the heavy gun area..In light i must be living in a vacuum because from what i have seen of the 6.5s is too eratic for my liking..Leaving F/class out of it, my range and the few others i have shot at i am yet to be impressed by any of the 6.5s ..We hear constantly from the US about the world beating metrics ,but quite frankly if you read the names it seems to me that the same guys keep rising to the top and thier numbers are quite small..This says to me that success with a 6.5x284 or 6.5.06ai is not all that easy ..In Fly in Aus i see in the not to distant future that it will take 240 plus to be at the pointy end ,at 1000 yds it is already a requirement that u have to shoot a low to mid 5inch group average for the day to be be jumpin on em ....I guess i'm goin to have to build that light gun to see if i'm right ,but it will only be for 600 and 1000yd as i could not see it possibile for me to shoot a L/G and and a Heavy in 1 Fly match..JR..Jeff Rogers
