300WSM Heavy Gun!

Post by a.JR »

Hi all , I have been helping a mate build a Heavy Gun ,thought some would be interested in the ongoing saga.. Bob L bought an older used H/G off a guy that gave up and i have tried to transform it into something that will shoot in today's enviroment .. It started as a 4inch LJC fiber stock that was poured solid , i added strength to the stock by gundrilling up the guts and through the pistol grip ,then inserting a stainless steel rod and cementing it in permanently in place .. I then machined the front and rear running sections on the milling machine and inserted threaded bosses .. Then cut the slots for the drop port ..The 1inch section Stainless pods were shaped and the tracking grooves machined in .. Quite a few hours in front of the mill plus a good number of endmills used to get in to a stage where Alan N could strengthen the fiberglass ..Once i get the dropport action back from Tony there is a little more machining before Al has to gelcoat the outside .. Bob picked the 300WSM so i went about getting the right info to get it shooting, A friend at Williamsport in the US had a super year in 2008 with his WSM so i picked his brain and he offered to get a 1000 210 Bergers for me as he got a new supply for his own gun.. Phil B came through with a Shit hot batch of the 210s ,he took his Juenke and comparators to Troxells gunstore and picked up 2500 of one batch (the best he has measured to date) and Bob L was very lucky to get a 1000 of these....We will follow the tune up Phil gave with H4350 or VV165 depending on the weather ..Although this is a budget rifle without a custom action ,just like Phils gun it will shoot as he finished the Williamsport season in 2nd place with a 4.669 / 4.987 / 5.013 / 5.505 / 5.741 / 5.996 inch for the 6 Match group agg ( was just pipped by another 300wsm ).. Will keep you lot updated as it comes together..JR..Jeff Rogers

You certainly seem to have a knack for making things look extremely heavy Jeff. Will look the goods once the Gel coat is complete and, dare i say it, the metal is polished.

What can i say, shiny things always perform the best. Justify it with the predictability and consistancy it will move in the bags if you need a reason

The drop port is being done for a 2.850" length case at my insistance as i beleive the 300 WSM cases will be binned shortly. My guess based on past experiences with the case. The results that have been acheived with this cartridge in the US are indeed very impressive, but i wonder at what expense in regard to the cases. I am very surprised that Phil give it away but pleased that he could pass on the info and the batch numbers of the 210s. It will be interesting to see how this thing shoots.
I am thinking that this stock must be over 20 kg by now as the base stock was 7 kg of solid fibreglass before the one inch thick stainless duckbill and rear slider were added.

Hi glenn , Sorry for the late reply ,i was at my beach camping spot for 3 days drinking cold beer and trying to think of new ways to cook prawns over an open fire ..Now you will have to ask TZ for the pics of the Dropport Rem as i do not have permission to impart his trade secrets ..JR.. Jeff Rogers..ps Grimo Heavy is as heavy does, good hey ,Bob L assures me it will be all bright and shiiiiny after i've had my turn in this process .. just a guess at 40 to 50 lbs total

Nearly forgot , This is a pic of a custom *Riser Block* i had made for Bob in Texas .. Can't believe how cheap this old guy made it for .. It makes the centerline of the scope 3.500 ins above the centerline of the action and allows the scope to be positioned up & back towards the shooter so that he has to sit up straight..JR..Jeff Rogers
