I have 223/222 to 221FB forming dies here..... I made 20VT from 223L brass... just awesome! Requires neck turning after, and annealing! Best part about making from 223L brass is the cases are annealed to where most of the forming happens.

I did find you have less case capacity using the 223L brass over the rem 221FB brass. Big difference, the Lpaua brass doesnt have loose priimer pockets straight out of a new pack... like the remington shit!

If I were to do anything on the 221FB case.. I would use Lapua brass.

Might sound like a stupid question.. But...

Is there much advantage in using Lapua Brass in say a standard .223 over winchester or remmington?

How much more do you get out of the brass...

Rumpus, if you read AI's post before yours :? you would think yes ! Most target shooters favour Lapua brass for it's long life and consistency.

Lapua brass is without a doubt the best brass by far.

Seems a shame to stuff it up by making 221 fireball cases from 223's

Remember the 308 cases with small primer pockets we used to make 6mm BR cases from?

They were never any good as no one seemed to get the 6BR to shoot anywhere as good as the 6PPC. After months of frustration along came the Lapua 6BR cases and the 6BR started to shoot. We concluded it was stresses in the reformed case combined with extreme variation in wall thickness.

However as a last resort you may have to use these formed 221 cases.

I have seen both ends of the spectrum with Lapua brass on more than one occasion. First off was the 6BR cases in my old BR rifle where the 20 match cases i had for the old 3 groove Maddco went 2400 rounds. Admittedly the load was a soft 31.5 grains of BM2 with the good old Kats 68 grainers but 120 reloads out of those 20 cases was exceptional. They didn't die there, they went on to do service in the same rifle with a fast twist barrel when i shot FClass.
Then came the 6.5/284 cases in my 284 HG Fly/1K rifle. These have been written about many times already so i want bore you other than to say they were just junk in every aspect.
The 308 cases and the 9.3x62 cases i use for the 7 and 30 cal JAT are just brilliant in their measurement and ability to withstand repeated firings in the high pressure zones. The 308 cases are so strong i reckon you could fill a case with Semtex, pull the trigger and watch the rifle destroy itself with the only thing to come out in tact would be that Lapua case. Sort of like the Shuler cases made by RWS.
With the 300 Win Mag cases, the jury is still out for me. I had these cases for the day my RWS cases split in my old faithful 300 Redneck 1K HG. When the day came to fireform the newly prepped Lapua cases, i used the same load of 67 grains of 2209 and the 200 grain Sierra i had in the RWS cases. The working load for the RWS cases was 72 grains of 2209 in the winter or 78 grains of H1000 in the summer, and those first 50 cases saw over 2000 rounds of competition. The weight of the RWS cases was 270 grains as opposed to the Lapua of around 216 grains. So the Lapua in theory had a larger internal capacity and it did by H2O measurement. I fire formed the Lapua cases and had no trouble extracting them and thought all was fine until i went home and set about to re measure them. All was well except that every primer pocket was 2 to 3 thou over size and would not hold a primer. So they went in the bin. I prepped another lot and fire formed them with 65 grains of 2209 and the same 200 SMK, but the working load was limited to less than 67 grains of 2209 with a total loss of over 200 fps or around 2940 fps out of the 30 inch barrel. Right out of the game at those pedestrian speeds and the aggs showed it. So not being able to get the RWS cases, i cut another reamer and pushed the chamber forward 250 thou and went to the 300 RedneX using the 340 Weatherby brass. Over 3150 fps for the 200 SMK and done in a low pressure zone that will see the brass need nearly zero prep between matches.
But on the other side of the coin, JR uses the same 300 Redneck as i did, uses the same Lapua cases with the same lot number(they were bought in a large quantity and weighed out so we had equal batches of brass) and runs 79+ grains of VV560 and the 187 BIB and has no issue with the brass at all. Go figure?
