Competition seater

Post by Trev »

Guys

Those of you that use a Competition bullet seater, are you able to set it up on your first load and leave it and then load 50 rounds without adjusting, or do you load the first one, back the seater of say 5 thou and then measure and adjust each round.

Reason I ask is because I cant leave it set at the one depth and then load rounds, each one will vary by 5 thou, I have the die set at zero then back it of 5 thou and then load a round and measure, then screw it up whatever it needs to be to get the correct depth, then back it of again and repeat process. Its lapua brass and SMK's.

What do you guys do.

Trev, I find mine seats them all the same.I use redding (I have one Forster and it goes the same).I am measuring to the ogive not the tip.Never been any issues.
For comp I sort all my projectiles by length first.
My testing has shown more flyers caused by length then by weight.
cheers,
Macca

Trev,

Like Macca said....Buy yourself a Hornady bullet comparator and measure your oal from the ogive and not from the tip.

Trev,

You you need to use your comparator to check ogives on your projectiles...if they are within a few thou then you have to make sure your primers are seat all the same and none are seated out to far....other then that pull your die to bits and make sure its clean and there is no burrs on the seater stem and everything is tight....what press are you using?

I think I MAY HAVE FOUND THE PROBLEM. I bought a bulk pack oF 168 gn SMK's from Elks and when loading them that is where I get all the variances. I have some 155gn Palma's and laoded them and they all come out the same. I reckon the bulk pack maybe seconds. They dont seem round at the ogive either.
