Hi All , Just looking back at the last 10 years in AUS at the average groups and scores in the Heavy Gun class.. I have to ask have we progressed very far ..Now out of the 3 ranges the best results stack up like this in the 6 match aggs ..I picked this because each year not everyone can get to all the matchs in their area ,so using the 10 match is to tough and some would have that the records often have a bit of arse thrown in, so here tis ..
6 group Agg
Year 2000 13.51ins
2001 11.22ins
2002 10.48ins
2003 9.98 ins
2004 7.85ins
2005 8.55ins
2006 8.08ins
2007 6.85ins
2008 7.89ins
2009 8.55ins
6 score Agg
Year 2000 87.500
2001 89.166
2002 92.500
2003 92.500
2004 93.500
2005 93.000
2006 92.833
2007 93.500
2008 95.833
2009 93.333
With a casual glance over theses figures we havn't gained very much ..I am ever hopefull that the International Postal match between us and the yanks will bring new and better competitors to the bench .. A New range participating would also help ..JR..Jeff Rogers

Re: HEAVY GUNS!
In group size its a 50% improvement so that's pretty good.25% give or take in score.
All in all given our weather in the places we shoot 1k i'd say it's not all that bad.
cheers,
Macca

I was having just this discussion with a bloke when we were shooting the other day and wondering if it is our weather that limits us or is it the shooter and equipment. I asked this because when I look at the latest results from Virginia the small group and agg winner in LG were 2.845 & 2.975 inches respectively and this made me really start to wonder.
My rifle has shot some very small numbers in testing so I know the rifle shoots but the best group at our last shoot with the switching, chopping and changing wind had 3.5 inches vertical which I think would have been as a direct result of the differing conditions I shot on but larger than the agg shot in the US.
Looking a bit deeper at the results for the other shooters from Virginia and amongst the results there were some that were no different to ours so I don't know that you can say that it is they just have better conditions. I think that it is my ability that is limiting how small the groups are more than the weather.
The thing I would love to do is be on the line at the same time to test my skills in the same conditions to find out once and for all if it is me

Re: HEAVY GUNS!
No doubt there top shooters are the best at the 1k game. They have expierence and good equipment.
I have spoke to blokes over there and the conditions can be variable but from my understanding several places on the eastern seaboard have less wind and less mirage more often then our ranges. The hotter areas suffer the same as us and there groups are around the same as ours.
I know i am the biggest problem with my groups and scores as well. But as you say unless you shoot on the same day at the same range and i think you need to shoot 6 matches to be sure as well.
cheers,
Macca

Re: HEAVY GUNS!
I just wish there were more 1000yd ranges around the place. If someone is lucky enough to live close to a 1000 yd range, they will build rifles to suit. I know I would like to build up a good 1000yd gun if I had a range within and hour or two drive, instead of 10 hrs.
Keep the pics of the heavy guns coming, I love the look of em.

Re: HEAVY GUNS!
Hi Rod , Your spot on about the number of ranges around..What we also need is a completely stabil set of rules , the Heavy Guns have very little rules and that's the way it should stay so that shooters don't have to buy a brand name product .. This encourages more home built stuff and keeps the costs down ,that said even in AUS it's not a walk in the park to come up with a winning combo.. The info on what works is up our way free for the asking ..JR..Jeff Rogers..pic of shinney Heavy set up from Mr Baer that is not free..
