.243 Factory Ammo

Post by Langers »

Hi Guy's,

Well I have just recieved the call to go get my new Tikka T3 Varmint Stainless Synthetic .243.
My Scope should get here mid next week from TOZ, so I am more than a little excited.

Anyways...... I need some advice on Factory Ammo for this beastie. I will be predominantly chasing Fox's and Wabbits, we do come across the odd mob of Pigs as well. I am thinking something in the 70gn - 80gn range?

I have the option of chasing the odd Donkey on another property but that will be few and far between and not the rifles main purpose (probably use 90gn - 100gn for these).

Now I know that different rifles will throw different rounds differently.......Still with me?....And even the exact same make, model, calibre in two different rifles will react differently so I am not expecting the exact same results. Just some advice that might save me wasting a few box's of stuff that just don't suit these rifles.

Cause next weekend I just want to run it in, Zero the scope and then unleash utter devistation on any feral that crosses my path.... :D

Any help is appreciated.

I am so excited I feel like a school girl on prom night......Like something is going to get Smashed shortly.

Langers,

I've used Winchester 100gr SP, Remington 75 & 95 grn Accutip but found the Highland SX 85gr Gameking the most accurate, not to mention cheapest. Sadly they're discontinued so to stick with the same projectile I use Federal Vital Shock, just as accurate (at nearly three times the cost). I find the 85gr GK a great all rounder from the small to larger thin skinned game.
I am so excited I feel like a school girl on prom night......
now that's a worry........

Bahaha schoolgirl on prom night.

Sick as balls your going to see Mr Tosh tomorrow with a grin bigger than the boobs at my bucks party.

Enough of the sayings.

Most people go with the remmy 75gr accutip's, but you can also go with the 55gr winny supremes and federal do a 70gr purple people eater round too- isnt that what you are going to try and reload with? It may tell you if the gun likes that bullet or not. Federal brass isnt so special IMO, winny is probably the pick of the bunch and remington a tad soft, but commonly available when you need it.

If we were smart we could blow off the fishing tomorrow and go run your barrel in down here

Thats the plan dude, Quinny is comming down as well. Think Mr Anderson is in town also, should be a good night, I am going to grab Tosh when he finishes next Sat, then grab Quinny, head up and run it in before nightfall.

Bring your Chrono up so Quinny can get some stats on his .223 if your keen. I know he wants to get a reading on it.

I will get the boy to ring ya if he has not read this already. I can't make the fishin anyways I wont have the scope till mid next week........ Will just have to sit here and stroke it till then.

Righto its on then.

I will head up saturday and home early sunday. Chrony will be packed, I doubt I will have the new stock inletted by that time for the BRX but if i do, I will bring that too for some fun. The practical will get its last load dev (chrony work) done when i get back from Karratha next week. oooh i think i might also bring the shotty as i have a stack of shells that need using. It will be my last blast before the wedding. I will also bring a spare scope in case yours doesnt arrive- would hate that to happen when you have a trip planned! Are you getting weaver bases?

Awesome, I don't know what Base Tosh is planning on putting on it. I will leave that to his genius..... I have ordered the Bushnell 6500 so its a 30mm tube, I think the plan was Leupold rings but other than that your guess would be better than mine. I think tosh also has something I can bolt on if mine doesn't rock up. Thanks for the offer dude.

Will chat to you before then Bro........Game on

Fuck ok now its gone pear shaped. This getting married stuff has balls on it. We are apparently entertaining friends from Tassie all next weekend as they have made the trip over for the wedding. Plus going up north at 4am monday doesnt help the cause. At least I got an Etec out of it. The bloke from tassie is into shootin and fishing so I can take him out down here, but I cant get a pass to go out bush. I will chuck the chrony and spare nikko if you need it (its got quick release mounts) in the bag and drop them into tosh's on wednesday or thursday when I fly in so you boys can play with them. Do you need anything from down here that you cant get in perth?

95grn Rem Accutips grouped the best in mine, but also cost the most. Federal 80gn SP worked fine and better priced.

No stress dude......Can't think of anything I need from down there, but then again dont really know what is down there that I might want..... Viscious circle. Will fix that when I come down in a few weeks after the wedding stuff has subsided.

Have to get you up to Quinny's as well. Will keep you informed. Thanks again man.

Just make sure you take your time running it in and dont let the barrel get too hot. If its a warm day the barrels out there get hot quick.

I would say the 75gr accutips will do you nicely. Inch high at 100m and you will smash everything. Tosh can adjust your trigger too.

You didnt miss too much fishing wise, but it was ok

Cheers Brad, Hope your work trip was not too stressing...... remember hearing something about chasing Barra in your "lunch break"..... Sounds horrible.

Now for the other question to everyone...... Remmington or Winchester Brass??? as I will be using the brass from these factory loads to reload with as soon as I get my act together. I will just buy the brass to match what I already will have from these factory rounds.

Any and all thoughts appreciated.

Thanks

6 in one half a dozen in the other mate. Remmy brass is a bit soft but is commonly available in WA where I find winny brass is better but not so easy to come by here... I wouldnt lose sleep over either, just get whats cheap and run your barrel in then move to some premo stuff til you load. If you can get a full box of 20 down the barrel before you start spotlighting, I would say invest in a box of the winny supreme 55gr loads for the night, your gun should like them enough to do a 1" group and thats all you need.

Enjoy, im taking the new etec for a run hopefully. And yes the baby barra were fun, the sandflies in the creek at onslow werent though.
