lee dies

does anyone know why lee dies arent recommended to be used on speer pils? picked up some 125 tnts to use in the 308, but come across that warning. any ideas?

I believe it's aimed at Speer projectiles and the use of the Lee factory crimp die to crimp projectiles which have no cannelure. There seems to be no reason for it other than possibly bad blood between Lee and Speer (owned by same company as RCBS) going back a few years.

thanks mate,
i loaded some up and found they were quite good, shooting less than an inch at 100metres. still needs more work as it was a rushed time at the range.

As I understand the tiff, Speer's response about Lee's dies was in difference to Lee's claim of their dies making Speer bullets shoot better with a good crimp. I have plenty of both and have a liking for the Hot Core bullets on whitetail deer. I rarely crimp anything except the hornet and lightly the .25-20 with lead. Advertising quarrel?

The other one was the use of Federal primers with the Lee Hand-priming Tool..Sposed to be a no go, but i know of P-lenty of people who have never had a drama. There could be an old safety issue somewhere there or mebe another bad blood scenario..?

I like the Lee hand priming tool and use them a lot. I've seen the primer use warnings in writing somewhere, and my own experience with primers tells me there are minute physical differences in actual use. I see also that the primer flipper tray gizmo on the lee gets "dusty" presumably from primer compound, so I clean them often. but I've also seen reloaders that had no sense of mechanical feeling or quick enough reactions not to seat primers sideways, squash two together, and so on. I did so myself. I think that is where the problems are from my view. Lee's tools notoriously let you seat primers upside down if you don't pay attention. I adopted a look and touch policy on every primer. Safety glasses for sure, although never set one off. pogy

I load Speer TNTs in mu 30-06 with a Lee Die. Never been a problem.
