Postal Fly

Post by albow »

Has anyone actually had a crack at the fly with their factory rifle as part of the postal comp?

If so what scores and groups were shot?

postal fly

Kenny

I am not sure how many fly matches have been shot to date. I think only two from the posts on here so there may be some interest still to come through.

I know the first match here in Townsville will be 21st April and as you said there has been a lot of effort to both get it up and running and arrange the prizes for competitors.

Besides winning the trophies in that manner isn't really winning.... got to at least earn it.

Is there even a list of "fly" shoots listed anywhere so people can check and see when we can have a crack??

I'd love to see a list of gazzeted fly shoots for the year so we can plan to try and attend some or even one.

Hopefully the rifle I'm going to use to get my first "fly" will be back to me just before Easter- and there might be a chance to give it a run over Easter.

Detritus,

What rig are you planning on using for the comp?

Rig is such an extravagant way of describing it.

I'll be using a Tikka 595 that was a factory .243 that SC has cut and shut the factory 1:10 barrel to a 6BR no turn neck.
It's a factory S/S Synth and I'll be using the sporter synth stock-its not even a varmint stock- on some sort of front rest and a rear sandbag or similar.

I haven't got any loads worked out or anything yet.- suggestions on what to try in a 1:10 twist??

The scope will be a 10 power fixed and I'll just have to hope there is enough adjustment in it to wind upto 500M.

It's the only thing I have avail to try at the fly as the only other working rifle in my safe is a .223 with a factory 1:12 barrel.

Hey albow,
I'm gonna try and wring some magic out of my Rem 700 BDL thats had an XR-100 barrel whacked on the end of it. I'll be pushing the preverbial uphill with the 1-in-12 twist i think, hence my waiting for a pleasant day  ( they'll all be crap and ill end up banging out all the targets on the last scheduled shoot  )...
It began life as the older 700 BDL Varmint in .222 that my dad picked up for me at a gunshow round 97' i think.
Had some weird Super Astron wide field of view scope that was replaced with a B&L 4-12 for my birthday (had to chip in half)
Shot like stink and provided awesome memories. Then it shot out  , and the best available option there and then happend to be the XR-100 barrel in .223. So i went to the darkside .........
It's all i got that fits the bill so i'm jumping in the ring regardless :D

Image
Pretty "Plane Jane" compared to some of the stellar rigs on here (plus the wood in the table is possibly better than that in the stock..) but hey, she's it for the time being... :)
Open to pill suggestions for 1in12 twist at 500m also

Ogre

Unable to help on 243 loads as only loaded for the 223. With regards to the scope giving enough elevation, I have shot the 600yd by just cranking up the elevation on my scope and got there quite easily. In all I had to come up 12 and 3/4 minutes from my 100m zero and I wouldn't think you will have too much trouble.

Detritus

I know what you are saying about the 1-12 twist. That is what I am shooting with my tikka and limits you to projectile weight. I am using the 55gn ballistic tips as that is all I have ever used and have always gotten great accuracy out of them.

I did find some 64gn match projectiles available from Berger in 223 for the 1-12 twist barrels however I decided not to go down that path. I thought I would just use what I've got while my dedicated fly/LR rifle is coming together.

With regards to the weather, just get out there and have a go  and that way when you get that good day it will be all the more easier... yeah right
