naughton fieldman 22mag

hey guys,
i just put some money down an a naughton fieldman in 22mag.
its a left had rifle with thumbhole stock that just fits like a glove. its got a heavy match barrel on it.
metalwork is flawless and the woodwork has a couple of the slightest litle dings that are hardly noticed.
ill post some piccys up when the PTA comes back and i pick it up.


anyone had one? heard anything about them?
any info would be great!

also the magazine was lost and replaced with one that is a little rough round the edges.

does anybody know where i can get one? or know of anyone selling one?

forgot to add... i will be in the market for a scope. dont want to go overboard with it but i dont want a hunk of crap either. i know the question gets asked way to many times but.. any surgestions on what scope? opened to new or used.

great rifles from what i've heard/seen. reliable, rather accurate.

you may find that the heavy profile barrel isnt that heavy... from the ones i've seen they are light profile barrels with a thick aluminium sleeve sweated on. this adds to the rigidity with out adding as much wieght as being steel for full thickness

the balance and handling of these rifles are beautiful imo, even with a medium size/wieght scope on them

Merv Naughton died some time ago, but his legacy lives on with those rifles. They were very good, and every one that I saw was a good shooter. As for spare parts you might be pushing poo uphill, but I would try the like of Peter Van Meurs (Procal), or Robert Tobler at Tobler barrels in Robertson NSW 0248 85 1881

When I was about 13 years old my brother in law came home one day with a receipt for a Naughton left hand .22LR in a thumbhole stock, he had just come straight from Merv's workshop I think it was Montmorency? Anyway I was to young to appriciate it back then but I saw one a couple of years back and it was a handy little rifle.

I have naughton feildmen except i rebarreled mine with a heavier barrel in 17hm2

The quite distinctive. I am supprised at how far forward the magazine is relative to the trigger and how long the receiver is for a 22LR. Does this provide any advantage?

yeah pretty long recevier don't know if its an advantage or not
They also made a semi auto version so not sure if they just used same as base for them

Had one of these for a few years but didnt have much success with it. Years later I worked out that the thumbhole stock was the culpret due to my hand tightening up as i pulled the trigger and the point of aim moving. It was a good looking gun that i bought new from the bicyle shop here in Lilydale Main st. I went out to Warrendyte and got a spare mag for it from the maker (thats a good indication of how long ago it was). A mate shot it once and had good results (he was a left hander and didnt use the thumbhole). As stated in one of the earlier posts, the barrel is an aluminium sleeve pressed over a thin steel barrel.
