heard about this one yesterday



It was invented in the 1960s by P.O. Ackley to set a world record for firing bullets at over 5000 fps (1524 m/s). It is based on the .378 Weatherby Magnum cartridge case, necked down to .224 calibre.

I always wanted to take the time to neck down a 50 BMG to .22 cal but it look like someone already has. Of course I was only going to do it for a gag but I would be curious to know the ballistics of that round.

A while ago I had read a little bit about P. O. Ackley and the 22-378 but can't find any more info on the testing they did, it mentioned how much throat erosion they got in just 50 rounds, (a ridiculous amount) but I don't recall any exact figures. Do you have a link to further info.

Man, the 17-357 looks sweet as. and the GMC short is pretty wicked aswell.

Fun to think about, but would need a 7 foot barrel to be of any use

Interesting info. The case preparation would drive me insane if I had to neck down the .50 BMG to .17 cal.

haha, it just looks so stupid how big and wide the case is, then it goes into a tiny bullet!

.17-357 RG:

Looks like a 357sig necked down, 357sig is the 40S&W necked down which in turn is a shortened 10mm. I guess if I was going to go to that much trouble I would use the larger capacity 10mm case. Would still be short enough to chamber in the smallest action you could find.

that 17bmf looks like a 17 hmr put in a chopped up case and then stuck in a 50bmg with the neck cut off it.
