Glad your getting some shooting in!
Not realy getting any in, i brought a box of factory to get it on paper and last week was the first time i have fired it  , it shot about 2-3" with Fiocchi ammo. I loaded 10 up with the previous owners fav load, shot 3 into a tiny little group, shot some rocks way out in the absense of any rabbits, went home loaded another 6 so i had 10 in total and went and smacked the fallow for old mate.

This rifle is showing some promise, work will slow down in a week or two im hoping and i will do a little yarn about it and test some more loads.

Just for the record, i reckon the 308 adn the 6.5 are great varmiters aswell as is the 338WM adn any other rifle you have in your hand when you see a feral

That rifle always shot well.
I imagine they explode the rabbits well.
Have a good one,

Thanks for the advice everybody

The 204 is looking good as i will be hand loading.

Now, to pick a rifle, on this subject!

My mate just got the Browning A Bolt 300wsm, for deer and any other feral we come across,
What is a varmint rifle which is around $1,300 or less?

Thanks heaps guys!

Was going to say a savage LRPV in 204 would do nicely but think they have rocketed to over 2K easy. The Savage VLP are excellent also.

$1300........................well you would be close to Tikka T3,Savage VLP and dont forget the second hand market as there are some good purchases to be had there as well.

for 1300 or less the CZ varmint hands down the ruger VT would be around that price range and they are also an excellent rifle, think the next jump in pricing puts you to a stainless Tikka but I would still prefer the CZ. push up to 1700 rem vsf savage 12 vlp

lots of choices.

I would buy a remmy simply as they can be customised. A CZ if you want good value for money that will shoot 'as is"

yeah, i will probably spend more money on a varmint rifle then my deer rifle, as im looking for the accuracy, and i dont even know what calibre i want yet for deer.

ive been looking at that rem.

Thanks

You wont get a Savage VLP for $1300 any more. I have one and i have been impressed so far but i havnt used it that much so cant give a real indication on how good it is, seems to shoot well though.

I had a Tikka T3 Varmint and was verry Happy with it as a straight out of the box rifle, it shot great was not fussy about ammo, and was not that heavy you couldnt carry it around. My Varmiting sees me walk a few Km.

My Mate has a Rem VLSS and the thumbhole stock is great, Dont know how it shoots as he wont group it but it certinly kills things.

I have seen a CZ Kevlar varmiter in 204 for around 1300 and it was a nice rig.

Yeah Tikka's are good value for your buck.

Who has one or know how they perform?

What scopes we all got?

Tikkas perform well as the general rule.
Scopes will be as wide spread as rifle choices.
I use a leupold 8.5 x 25 x 50 on my Sako TRG(was a 4.5 x14)
I use a Night force 8x32 x 56 on my Rem 223 and 308.
I use a Night Force 12 x 42 x56 on my 6BR and 284.
I have tryed most brands at one time or another and now save and buy the ones I like best.
There are lots of good cheaper(price is cheaper not the quality) scopes like Vortex that will fit a starting budget.Like reloading gear buy the best YOU can afford.

yeah i notice you buy things once, going by the NF's and leupold's.
I guess its better to buy it once then 3 times over.
what would be min/max zoom?

Scope wise I would be amazed if you could get a better scope than a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44 or 50 for varmiting.

You get it through Antony here at AusVarmit and you will get a great price, lifetime warranty to match Leupold and optics that equal or better the Leupold Vari X III series for a lot less money.

Send Antony a pm and get a price on what you like you will be pleasantly suprised I am sure.

cheers

On something like a 204 probably 6x20 would be good.I personally go high end because that's what i like doing,I like to see the fox change his mind.
Some people find it hard to use high end magnification as it reduces their field of view.I am very used to it and have little trouble picking up foxes and rabbits on 32x or 42x.It lots of practice I guess.
You will find 8x or 10x is adequate and good under lights.Gives good field of view and is used in fixed power by a lot of pro shooters to cull roos etc.
Again you need to look through a lot of scopes and magnifications to get a feel for what you like.

yeah, true
my mate just got a 3 - 9x 45 leupold, i love the quality
he also has a 3 - 15 or 6 - 15 x 50, (forget, something to 15) but the quality seems to get worse as you zoom in, its also leupold.
