Help with new project!

Post by Ackley Improved »

Hi all

Well it must be time to dream up a new project, and I am not to sure what I am going to do.

Thought you guys might be able to pipe in with some ideas.

I currently have or it is in the process of building

22lr Anschutz benchgun
6mmDasher Panda LG
6.5-284 BAT LG
6mmPPC Diamondback LV
308 TAC30 tactical rifle!

I can see one gap to fill, and that is a heavygun.. Or maybe a bigger caliber in the tactical rifle??

For a heavygun I think a dualport 10" BAT would be the action choice, and the stock a Shehane HG tracker. 30" 1.45" barrel, no block.

The caliber would be 7mm or 30cal. I like the idea of the 300WSM or the 7mmWSM. Also something based off the 8X68S case.

Tactical rifle.... 338LM....?????

What would you build yourself??

Cheers

30 cal with a 90 or so grain capacity case (H20) using the 200 SMK. Dual port BAT would be just fine. 338 LM would be a backward step.

Do you have a dedicated 500m Fly rifle?
does Lapua make 8x68 cases?

Malcolm

I have both a 6mmDasher and 6.5-284 rifle than can be used for Fly. Both Lightguns. Lapua does not make the brass, but RWS does $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

Tony Z, you like the Sierra 200MK's? Maybe a 30cal using the 8X68S case then? That would be excellent I would think. If I were to build a 338LM, it would not be a benchgun, but rather a tactical. I believe the 338's cant run with the 30's off a bench.

Any other thought out there.. ideas...??

Yeah mate i was thinking you were talking about a bench gun as i think a 10x2 BAT is just a little on the heavy side for tactical stuff. The 338 LM at around 115 grains of powder is just too much for a barrel to sustain its full accuracy potential with the amount of heat produced. I think a 338 built on the 338 Win Mag with the 250 SMK would be a far better option. 2700 - 2800 fps and let the BC do its work aswell as leaving a nice big hole to see on the Fly target. What the 30 has going for it is the range of pills with the 200 being the pick of the commercial stuff readily available here in Aus. JR shot them recently for a trial until he could get more BIBs. His 13 twist barrel just drilled nice little groups with them at 500 M with very little load work proving that they are not fussy. They certainly do measure the best of any commercial pill i have had anything to do with. A stark contrast when compared to the 107 SMK in six mil.

Choices!

Hi AI. I must admit to wanting to see a Full on US store bought "double happy throwdown" style of Heavy Gun competeing here in AUS..You know the one fully finished by one of the "Names" like MR Baity , Dave Tooley or Bill S..It is also obvious that some guys are going to do good even if they turn up with a 22 hornet glued to a small house brick so it's not all in the smiths hands,but.. Most competitors don't do their own gunsmithing therefor they usually buy the individual pieces to spread the costs out, along the way they take ideas from everywhere .. I personally think this is a mistake , U have to trust someone ,if you have to do it a bit at a time then send installments to your favourite plumber but don't end up listening to 5 different guys..If it were me i would sell off what i don't need to get the dough to order a complete package off the one smith .. I have never been to a match since 2000 where i have said to myself "boy that's going to be hard to beat" except in TSV... Adding up the last few years at 1000yds at the IBS ranges in the US , in the 6 match group aggs i could have placed in the top 10 shooters at all of the IBS clubs with something we dreamed up and built here..I just wish that TZ would set up a full time Gunsmithing business here in Townsville ,mabye i might get a job done quicker ,mabye it would get worse.. JR...PS...All that said if i could not do my own ,i would order a 300 ACK from Bill Shehane and follow everthing the guy said down to the color of the underpants needed for a match..ps ..ps ..Prediction = Bill S will be IBS SOTY at 1000yds again in '07

AI, Not really inside info ,but he's been SOTY in IBS 3 times now i think,so my prediction is he's in with a fair chance ..Last time we talked he had shot 4 successive targets at 1K with the new Broughton , two 4 inch groups and two 5 inch groups with one 100 score and 3 x 99s,..I'll take that as a good omen for '07..JR..Jeff Rogers.............

Id go the other way
A 22BRx47 Lapua case 22 BR shaped front on a 6.5x47 lapua case.

A 1:8 or 1:7.7 twist.
Get the jackets that MR little or Charlie robbinson would use to make 80 grain HPBT.
Get them to make a projectile shape that has a .250 long on size driving band above a D-46 rebated boat tail- the rest of it ogive/nose.
to make a HPBT with a massive BC and the D46 design should help the jacket lock to the core to hold it together at high RPM.
with it zero'd at 1000 yards you still have over 500 ftlbs of energy- plenty for foxes. should be able to get up over 3500 fps

really use it to shoot out as far as you want

just an idea of mine
