what is a drop port.???

I find it hard to believe that a patent can be issued on a design that is duplicated when one removes a magazine or floorplate from a 100 million commercial actions worldwide. Just like the Jamieson fiasco with the short fat crap ratio law suits he won. Only in America.

Confused the hell out of me. So instead of having one hole which is used to load and unload, you now have two holes, one to load one to unload? The loading port must be as long as the unfired round, and the "drop" port must be longer than the cartridge. The holes must be offset, with the front "loading" port further forward to prevent the loaded round simply dropping straight through? So the bolt travel must be longer?

And this somehow makes for a stiffer action?

I must have missed something because to me this looks "cool" but I cannot see how it makes a better rifle. Or is it just to help with brass collection?

To me the best and stiffest action would have a single port only fractionally bigger than the loaded round. Or even better no port at all, breech loaded with a controlled feed type bolt to pull out the empty cartridge.

Could somebody please explain why this drop port is good?

Hi ZZ, As far as i know TZ and myself are the crash test dummy's for the world in regards to Magnum Dropport actions..When the decision was made to go this way i approached Stiller for help(He has the patent) in the US about the angle used where the case drops away ..His answer was that he was not interested in Magnum cartridges and was not concerned what we did at all and we were on our own..So it's a guess ,works good butt..Following pics are of the spent cartridge dropping away and also of the fresh round going into the chamber..I think u can see that the dropport is smaller than the load port .. The strenght of any action is in fact in front of the bolt lugs, the amount of gaps behind that really only affect the bedding area , this would become more evident by viewing an Alloy dual port Stolle..As is the case most Benchrest actions are glued to the stock and that effectively increases the action strength anyhow.. Shoot against me one day in a brief window switching condition and i'll show u why a dropport is the fastest thing around..JR..Jeff Rogers........................

Excellent, thanks. I was trying to work out why it should be any more accurate, and of course it isn't. It's purely a speed thing. Now I understand!

Since doing JRs action first up, i had a closer look at the geometry and consequently my own drop port action has a port that is two thirds of the cartridge length at 1.75 inches with a drop hole of only one inch through the stock.

I contacted Stiller about making a drop port in a Python action.. for the WSM case.

He is not interested in making the drop port for the magnum cases.

What a shame!!!

Was planning a 300WSM with a drop port Python in a Shehane HG tracker stock..

Oh well..

Back to dreaming up more projects!
