Mick,
IMHO you want at least a 22" barrel for a 7-08 in australian conditions to get the most out of it. If I was in the market for a new rifle in the chambering, the sako 85 would be my choice, or if thats out of your price range, I really don't think you can beat the Tikka's for value for money (I tell everyone that, and I don't even own one, but plenty of my mates have them and they shoot really well. Chris 'bluey' @ QGE told me that they have had only one returned out of the thousands that they have sold...)

Well you can bet a "ted owned" rifle is a proven performer!!

JasonF: what is AHN?

Feralbuster: that's what has steered me away from the compact, I've got .30/30 which is what I use for close range work, I wouldn't mind something to reach out a bit further and bowl them over! I've looked at the Tikka and didn't like it, I know they shoot well and the guys at my LGS swear by them (never getting returned) but I've just never been a fa of how they feel.

Cheers

Here is the text of the ad:

For sale Ruger M77 some call them M77MK1 with tang safety. Stainless MAB barrel fitted 24inch, bead blasted to stop shine, trigger job, pound and threequarters, shoots really well. Scope mounts included. If in pick up area, 100rounds loaded ammo, Fired around 400 shots since barrel fitted. $700 The scope doesn't go with it. Scope is a near new 3 to 9 X 50 VX1 Leupold. If you want it left on the rifle I would need to get $400 for it as will have to go out and pay more than that to replace it.

I just realised that the ad doesn't include contact details for Ted Mitchell (aka "Deermaster" on AHN). You will need to join up over there to send him a private message.

Mick, I know what you mean about the Tikkas. I recommend them based on my mates success with them (for people who want a 'budget' rifle that they can just go and shoot), but they ain't my style of rifle, and I won't ever own one, mainly because I'm now addicted to building custom rifles  , and the european stuff is limited to getting a stock made, or putting a new barrel on them! Though I've begun to get a soft spot for the Sako 85...

I have a really nice older series Remington 700 BDL ( C prefix) in 7mm 08 that has probably fired less than a couple of hundred rounds, shoots beautifully, bedded floated trigger job and about 50 cases that I would like to sell if anyone is interested

JasonF: Thanks, I'll jump on there soon and have a look. What do you guys think of this setup? sounds alright to me.

270: mentioning a rifle like this creates some real problems for me as I am specifically chasing a stainless laminate but am a sucker for a nice blue/wooden rifle (which I imagine this is correct me if I am wrong!)
Where abouts are you located and what are you after for it (PM me if you'd prefere)
