Re: Pellet for foxes.??
ogre,
What's the furthest range you've killed a fox from with a Kodiak? I've got a family of five foxes on my land. They tend to hang out around 25m from the back door. I'd like to shoot from a lying position on the back porch. I'm pretty confident my 0.25cal rapid Mk1 will knock them over from 25m. what do you reckon?

What velocity is your mk1 doing with kodiaks?
yep that sums it upnative hunter wrote:At 25mtrs the rapid in 25cal will smash em.!!

I don't have a chrony, but Lewis measured it before shipping it to me. He got 814fps with Kodiak Match (45.5 ft/lbs).

30.7 Kodiak at 45 FPEtrapper wrote:I don't have a chrony, but Lewis measured it before shipping it to me. He got 814fps with Kodiak Match (45.5 ft/lbs).
will still give you 33 FPE at 45 yards ( my zero point giving a fraction over 3/4 inch high mid range trajectory-30 yards)
Assuming most good springers will do 15-16 FPE- thats 150 yards range till you drop to that level of power- now unless you are master shot like Yrrah I wouldn't suggest you shoot out that far
especially since the drop at 150 yards from a 45 yard zero is somewhere over 60 inches (1.5 meters)
place it right and you will do fine out to 60 yards (3 inch low) or more- and thats the thing- are you good enough to head shoot that far??
I know I'm not- but I keep practising at the range till I am

Re: Pellet for foxes.??
at 25 yds a .25 cal rapid would be absolutely brutal. a while back while out hunting with my old mans hw100 .177 my brother shot a small fox at 25 yds and it dropped on the spot so the .25 cal will absolutely smash them at that distance
cheers

Re: Pellet for foxes.??
If you can, just use the .22lr. No debate. Especially if you can get subsonic hollowpoints. I figure that you need at least 4-5fpe per pound of animal on small game, and 1-2fpe for large game (over 150lbs).

Sorry mate cannot agree with you there- an air rifle is perfectly legitimate tool for hunting if you use it withing it's working parametersfritz wrote:If you can, just use the .22lr. No debate. There are places I shoot where i couldn't use a 22lr- even subsonics- it just wouldn't be safe or there are noise issues or various other things
Over here we cannot own silencers without special govt aproval- and that aproval is almost impossible to get for a normal person. It's a jail term for being found with an un-permitted silencer
I got distracted while writing this post and there is more info needed hereogre6br wrote: Assuming most good springers will do 15-16 FPE-

it should read
Assuming most good .22 cal springers will do 15-16 FPE- and you can use them for hunting out to 25-30 yards
you will be able to use the .25 cal at that range no problems
but if we went on just power alone thats 150 yards range till you drop to that level of power( of the 22 springer)-..... and the rest of what I wrote
Its not just about power- its about placing all the power you have availiable correctly and if you can do that you will drop your targets.
Yes the extra power of the .25 cals makes kills easier especially at closer ranges ( sub 45 yards)
but once you have cleaned up the first couple of foxes the rest will stay further away and then your ability at range esimation and shot placement will come into the equation

Re: Pellet for foxes.??
Has anyone tried these in a Rapid?

Expensive, but would certainly pack a punch!

to heavy- it would be hard to get usefull velocity out of them in a standard rapid
now some of these highly modified rapids that are pushing 1200+ FPS with Kodiaks ( SFA shot count though) might be able to use them
I can see the pellets in flight with mine doing over 800 FPS ( 840 odd)
Double the weight of the pellets you have to take 2/3 the velocity off to get some sort of reading
I ran some rought figure- seeing the add doesn specifiy it I assumed the BC was better then the Kodiaks at 0.0370 so I just used 0.045 as a BC
so assuming you get 500 FPS from it- just assuming- 33 FPE at muzzle
45 yard zero gives me mid height trajectory of almost 4 inches at 25 yards
2 inches low at 50 yards
and almost 7.5 low at 60 yards- at 60 yards 24 FPE left- my kodiaks are still doing 32 FPE and just a fraction under 2 inches low

Ogre, I know that airguns are a perfectly capable tool and they will do the job. I just feel that it's easier for us all to use the .22lr if you CAN. That way there's no debate over what to use.
Use predator pellets anyway...

Re: Pellet for foxes.??
I know this is an older thread, but since it's high up the list and people tend to use older threads as references and some people don't venture up to the main forum...
Eun Jinn 28.8gn pellets are excellent. They will remain subsonic up to around 50fpe and have enough weight to hold well in the transonic region.
That's an Evanix AR6@60fpe.
My experience as you go up in power, is that pellet weight begins to become critical. I find even the 25gn pellets are a little small and tend to lose accuracy. Which, after all, is everything when you're talking about foxes and air rifles. If I could get 30 or even 40gn pellets, I would use them. ( And I'm still looking )
Scope is an AN/PVS-4 Starlight scope. Pick a night when the foxes can't see you, and range isn't an issue anymore. However, it does take some effort ( making noise ) to get them to stand still long enough to make sure you have a good shot.
David.

What sort of range can you spot the foxies with the NV ? Last one I looked through would have been lucky to see them at 70+ unless you have another illum source near the target.
Have to be fast on the shot at that range. Can you also describe the balance on that AR, looks to be almost impossible to manage.
Lots of Ogre in that thread....

Re: Pellet for foxes.??
I saw this fox originally at about 100m... my navigation scope ( headmount ) uses two unfocused IR LED's ( less power than a cheap torch ) It was a starlight night - no moon and heavily overcast. I couldn't even see the trail beneath my feet and I can usually see that by starlight.wifecallsmegrumpy wrote:What sort of range can you spot the foxies with the NV ? The fox wasn't moving too fast, so I closed that to about 40, then started whistling to get it's attention. I actually took the shot standing and correcting by eye... I'll add the "hitpoint" photo at the end.
The AN/PVS-4 would probably pick out a moving fox at about 100m in starlight without any illumination. 250-300 with a dedicated illuminator. If there's any moonlight I could pick them out at that range without an illuminator. My digital spotter will also pick a fox out, identifiably around 100m ( some people claim 300m for digital, but to be honest, I saw a fox at 200m and it wasn't until it was around 100m away that I could visually ID it. Though the eyeshine bobbing around it made me think it was a fox ).
My son was able to track the fox without the illuminator, but he had a multi-stage scope, which can see well on those kind of nights. It was a home-made passive spotting scope.
Horses I can make out at around 400m My neighbor was even able to identify them by name! ( her horses )
70+m sounds like Gen1... Which about corresponds with my Digital results. The other scopes I use are all Gen2/3.
David.
