Digital Calipers/ Verniers

Well, seems between keith and i we have misplaced our last set so i stopped by jaycar on the way home and grabbed myself a new set. Accurate down to .01mm ( 4 places after the . if were talking inches), and feels very solid and nicely made. If anyone is in the market for one it set me back about $40

and they work perfectly and are very repeatable and accurate, their good value Grimo, thats a bit cheaper than what I paid a couple of years ago.

Thanks for the heads up GriMo, ill stop pass and grab a set at that price. I went to Bunnings thinking that id get some in that price range but there cheapest set was $90. Cheers Ron

I picked up a set of digital ones from gasweld a year or so back for about the same money and they have been great so far not sure what the brand is but I think Toolies has them as well and they looked exactly the same so probably some generic brand that gets rebranded.
I have also checked mine quickly against a set we have at work which are calibrated every few years and it was pretty close to them

Hi I'm a new member of this forum and just starting to purchase bits and pieces to start reloading my own ammo. I only have one centerfire rifle a .243 Win tikka varmint . Thanks for the info regarding the digital caliper i ordered one online from jaycar electronics and they are cheaper than going in the store $31.55 including insurance whereas the same one sells for $40 in the store.

Have anybody tried those digital scales available in ebay? they are being marketed for jewellers but i guess it can be use for reloading as well because they have grains in one of the units. I have my Lee scale but I think I need a second one just to confirm my measurement.Thanks

I have some sleezebay special digital scales, but i do all my powder measurement on an old set of Lyman beam scales if thats any indication

The name escapes me at present but i know one of the guys on the board purchased a set of the ebay scales. Using some check weights they were pretty accurate.

How accurate in use have you found the calipers so far

do they have on the beam the actual measurements as well so if the battery dies you can use them manually or is it just the digital read out?

Havent had a chance for much actual use as yet but measuring the known diameters of things around the house, and also measuring some rounds i know the length of it has been proven to be reliable,. repeatable and atleast as accurate as my loading practices.

As for the measurements on the side it hassome, but couldnt be used as a vernier. More of a ruler if you have no batteries. But hey, this is the digital age, and i prefer the convenience of a digital screen then trying to figure out dials etc. the exception to that being watches/clocks.

If you guys have a good look at your Digital Verniers, then go into places like Total Tools, All Tools Aand any other shop, you will see they are exactly the same. I reckon its like most things, all made in China on the same factory floor, and just get stuck in a different box. I bought two pairs from ALDI, $12:95, I compared em to the micrometers I use for my engines and guess what, they read within a thou, and my engine stuff is Mitutoyo AND COST TEN TIMES AS MUCH.

Stick with the cheap stuff, its great.

I'm a bit the other way with the digital calipers. After being less than impressed with the cheapies accuracy, and expecially their ability to hold a constant zero, was quite happy to fork out $200 for some Mitutoyos.

I have experience in both the verniers and scales

I am like Rick on this and started out with a cheap pair that were very inconsistent in holding their zero which was a bit frustrating when batching projectiles so I kept an eye out on ebay for a set of mitutoyo's and got an 8" set for $75 US secondhand that were immaculate

Another good set that I borrowed were a set of Kinchrome and depending on what you are measuring eg batching large numbers of projectiles I would suggest getting an 8" set as they are more comfy to use for long periods.... atleast in my big oaf hands

As far as scales off ebay they are OK for batching brass or projectiles but i found that when you trickle up powder they powered off becuase the weight was not moving fast enough

Yep, Thats why I prefer the old school dial calipers. You know that they are working, and no problems with zero reset/batteries etc.
Same thing with power tools. For cordless you cant go past a good brand, the batteries are what you are paying for.
However for plug in 240v tools, I just cant stop buying cheepr Ozito or GMC. 2 year replacement guarantee, cant go wrong.
