Moly question!
Well, I have run a few hundred 107's though the Lyman moly kit, piece of piss. All came out perfect, and look great.
One thing is pissing me off though. What the hell are you guys using to seperate the media from the projectiles? I am using the ceramic media that the kits comes with.
Cheers

I'm finding my fingers work best to remove the Lapua sticker from the top of the box of coated projectiles.

Yes Indeed. With all the money that you have and knowing that your about to have your pockets filled by Kevin Rudd I would have thought that you would just buy them pre-cured.

Re: Moly question!
Hi AI,
I place 100 rojectiles in an old pill bottle and add a very small amount of moly.I put a piece of gaffer tape around the top of the bottle and throw it in with some cases that are being cleaned. When the cases are done I take out the plastic bottle take off the tape and rub the projectiles in an old towel. They come up like bought ones(minus the wax).No media,no lead shot and no major hassels.
Works even better on a hot day if you warm the projectiles in the sun or with a hair dryer etc.
Have a good one,
Macca

I'm not sure what your ceramic media is, but I use ball bearings, and I separate them out with a mesh screen (actually a sieve). It also gets most of the loose moly off. I hope this is what you were asking?

Re: Moly question!
Moly is so 90's ........well I was under the impression it's fallen out of favour compared to being all the rage in the 90's. How popular is it at major shoots ?

In short,fairly popular .

Re: Moly question!
While some have it pretty well worked out and do get good results, my experiences with moly have shown me that it is a sure way to get vertical at a 1000 yards. Shoot naked and moly side by side at a 1000 yards and about 90% of the time you will dump the moly. Some rifles will shoot twice the vertical with moly than without but on the odd occasion shoot a tight group making you think it is worthwhile. If it aint flatlining for every group, it aint worth owning. But hey, knock yourself out.

Re: Moly question!
I have noticed a fair few short range BR shooters using it.Tony what is the reason for the extra vertical
when using moly???

Re: Moly question!
Im definitely not a target shooter, nor do i use moly, but if i had to guess i would say inconsistencies with the level of coverage would change pressures., hence changed MV and there's some vertical.
Then again, i could be way off.

Re: Moly question!
Chris, while everything may look ok, i believe there is a wider velocity spread, thus vertical, than is desired. More moly, less moly it all contributes at times to a varied velocity spread but also a differing pressure time curve also. From my viewpoint it is just another variable i do not need to enter into the calculation. But as is said, not every barrel shows this, i just don't bother finding out these days.

Re: Moly question!
G'Day all,
I have tried bare bullets and yes I think they might give you a slight edge in SR BR but it comes with extra cleaning and risk to the bore. In hindsight, I stuff more groups/scores with poor wind/mirage reading than moly vs bare.
I use moly on everything and have not seen anything to convince me completely that I'm not competitve when using moly.
Even in F class using the 6x47 in the last few months is not giving me vertical unless there is mirage and/or a tail wind where you would expect it anyway; as we found out at Bendigo a few weeks ago with 28 degrees, a tailwind and mirage boiling away nicely!
Nevertheless, here in Victoria and south of the Great Dividing Range; a cooler, less humid enviorment, wind is more the enemy than anything else.
Remember, moly bonds to metal, it has a natural afinity to metal but not to itself, so there simply cant be a built up of excess moly, once it is plated to the copper, that's all you are going to get on the bullet.
Food for thought.
Cheerio Ned

I'll see what happens with the moly! If it works it works!
Using the inherently accurate case might help!

Yeh Trev, go for it. I am just relaying my experiences with it and in no way wish to discourage anyone from trying it for themselves.

Yeah I know mate, but just somethings you got to try for yourself. I really think that I will notice no loss in accuracy. Time will tell!Tony Z wrote:Yeh Trev, go for it. I am just relaying my experiences with it and in no way wish to discourage anyone from trying it for themselves.

I will run the loads through a Chrony too, so if I do get a odd velocity spike that I can not fix, I'll try naked's to see if it goes. I dont think this will happen though.
