The price of ammunition has also soared.
Our club are now selling SK match for $11.00 a packet. I think it may be $11.30.

"But rather then buy an action would it not be more viable to buy one that is complete rather then build something up ? "
If it's for Fly or BR etc it would be wiser to get something built by a gunsmith like SC rather than something off the production line at the Savage factory. It's not the cheapest but it's going to be put together by someone working to much tighter tolerances and checks than you'll find on a production line. That's where you'll find a step up in accuracy from the best of the factory rifles. Otherwise there would be no market for all the custom actions or for gunsmiths to true factory actions. All this stuff has been learnt by the BR guys years ago....

exactly. trued by SC, match grade barrel and shehane stock but $2000 + cheaper than my BAT. As they both have the same stock if we share a bench then the rest/ bags are not moved when we take our turn

Definitley, IF you were building something purpose built then the above is correct.

Re: Savage Target action
Of course a trued up rifle will perform better then that of a factory rifle, however the F Class Savage is not the run of the mill. You could always have Mr Clancy reduce the tolerances and tight neck it, as there is 30 inches of barrel to play with and at least you will not have to buy a stock.
I think you will find that as a bog, stock standard rifle that it is doing pretty well in the States and has already one a few competitions.
I had Mal's one out at Silverdale on the 200 mound, very, very impressive, as I posted earlier, clover leafing at 200. In fact I should have taken Mal's advice and bought one.

F class doesn't even start till 300m, and if you do your homework you'll find that tight groups at 100/200m don't guarantee the same at longer distances.Sean Ambrose wrote:, very impressive, as I posted earlier, clover leafing at 200. In fact I should have taken Mal's advice and bought one.
I'm not saying the Savage built rifle is a dog (I really like the stock design), but that a target rifle built by a gunsmith who specialises in that area, will be a cut above anything you'll buy from Rem or Savage. Why spend $$ on labour rechambering a factory barrel when it costs the same to chamber a high quality barrel. Sure the Savage rifle is doing well in the US, but the trued Rems, BATs, Stillers, Stolles, and other upmarket gear etc are yet to be pushed out of the top spots.
Each to their own of course - somehow I doubt you'll convince anyone who has a BAT actioned custom rifle, that a factory Savage is going to have comparable performance. It's like saying a Commodore is just as good as a BMW
The idea of using identical stocks to make sharing of rests/bags easier has a lot going for it.
I think that most accuracy fixated shooters reach a point where they decide that their next rifle will be a custom with a match grade barrel, built by a good gunsmith. Some will spend more $$ than others before they get to that point. I've been accumulating bits for the last couple of years as my budget allows and am prepared to wait until I can get what I want rather than something close to it.

Are you Fair dinkum Trevor T?
First of all you tell people what they are not allowed to wear and now you want to dictate who reads your threads and dare I say....? In a public forum!
Perhaps you may have got away with that in Northern Ireland but mate your in Australia now.
I still cant believe that your churning up inside over that incident.
I really don't think that this country has ever produced a vehicle that could ever be compared to European vehicles.
However, technology is not as expensive as it used to be, nor the price of production, no doubt some companies realised that they needed to spend some time on research and development and I think that the new Savage F class is the final result of such process.
I also think that the Savage has been seriously under rated and that it no doubt has a few of the Freddie Freemasons within the fraternity a little scared.
I can tell you that we used his Savage at the second last fly shoot in Canberra and.... it out shot my Remington. A rifle that had been trued and tight necked by Mr. Clancy, admittedly it may be a factory barrel but it still has not seen 1000 rounds.

Have to agree with you on that one, my 30 year old 7 series is a lot better then any Commodore that was ever produced from that era and it is only recent that Holden adopted the technology and luxuries that were present two decades earlier in European vehicles.Sam Walker wrote:It's like saying a Commodore is just as good as a BMW

Re: Savage Target action
Trevor,
Mate I may have missed it but what are you planning to build based on the Savage action?
I spoke to Shane ages ago about the Savage action and he didn't seem that keen on them
...........................he obviously has changed his mind and they were only fairly new to the market as well.I believe that most actions eg model70's,Rem's,Sako's etc can if worked on by a comment smith will shoot equally well, the decider is what's available as far as triggers, stocks etc and also some are more desirable than some as well,"you can polish a turd all day and at the end of the day still end up with a turd".
I would bet that a Savage could be made to shoot as well any Remington which will shoot as well as a full custom!!!!......................having said that I know which one would feel the nicest to use but that aside I reckon try the savage and see how it goes, should turn out fine.....and as I have indicated I am rather keen on them myself.
Trevor are you going to use the action nut or do away with it????,what does the action weigh, what weight are you having the rifle built to??.
Regards Chris

Re: Savage Target action
Shane doesnt recommend them. He says they are still a factory action and not in the league of BAT etc. Problem is I cant afford another BAT. My wife will get to a few shoots with me (500 fly and 1000 br). Its an excuse to get away without the kids. She got her licence recently and last time she said " if I come again can I shoot". I think it might alleviate boredom!!!
So I decided on a 6x 47 L as Rinso Jnr keeps beating me with his, and as Rinso so lovingly pointed out, I do not have the ability to shoot to my rifles capability and no matter what action Shane works with, it is unlikey that Kerrie will outshoot it. If she does she can have my BAT
I do not believe Shane will retain the barrel nut.

Re: Savage Target action
An email from Mr Shehane confirms the stock is on the way and he is very happy with how it turned out.
But now she is telling me it really is her rifle and not just an excuse for me to have another and when I threatened not to make ammo for her if I cant use it she reminded me that I have taught the basics to my stepson and she can join the forum and ask for help OR call uncle Rinso!! Much too smart for me this wife of mine

Re: Savage Target action
I recently saw an add for savage showing a 1000y F class group of under 5" with a stock 6.5-284 there was a competition running with a reasonable cash prize for the first to beat it a stock savage rifle.Sam Walker wrote:F class doesn't even start till 300m, and if you do your homework you'll find that tight groups at 100/200m don't guarantee the same at longer distances.
Do they think there moneys safe? I'm sure it will sell a few either way.

Re: Savage Target action
Not sure what you mean - someone has to beat a 5" group at 1000m with a factory rifle, or any kinda rifle ? I wouldn't like to give odds on it..who knows ! a few things have to click into place to beat that, is the challenge just for Aussies or is it bigger than that ?

Re: Savage Target action
Had a quick look for the mag but couldn't find it. The way I read it, it had to be a stock savage rifle to claim the prize and I'm almost certain it was Australia.Sam Walker wrote:Not sure what you mean - someone has to beat a 5" group at 1000m with a factory rifle, or any kinda rifle ?
