Post by native hunter »

G"day All
Wondering who's attending the fly shoot in early march, I will be in Canberra that day and hopefully have a gun with me and shoot for the postal shoot.
Would be good to know who will be there.
Regards
Damien Webb.

Shane, I really wanted to rack your brain at the Canberra shoot about fly calibers.
My missus loves weddings, how about I send her to the wedding on your behalf and you come down to Canberra and we talk guns an' stuff with the boys

Got to go put my new rear bag through its paces, and test my current load in the warmer weather before hand.,

Might back off the load by .3 grains and see how the little Dasher shoots! Loaded at 23C, so better check with 10C added on! RL15 is a little more temperature sensitive than the 2208!

Malcolm.. talking calibers... maybe you should start your thoughts now, and get some chat in before hand!! We'll all run out of time at Canberra!

Heavy or light gun, can you handle heavy recoil??

I'm thinking of a straight 284W barrel to switch with my 6.5-284 to shoot the berger 168 VLD's at 2950fps!

Cheers

AI, I won't say I can't handle recoil and I doubt if I would ever shoot 1000m's ( I'm flat out hitting the target at 500m's), so I probably won't ever need a huge magnum.
I had all sorts of magnum's as a young bloke, but my physic is all skin and bone.Image
You guys have given me very valuable info on what calibers to use and what not to use, but I love the idea of wildcats. The cartridge on the left is a 300gn Sierra seated in a 9.3x66 Sako case, the center shot is a 250 Sierra and the right hand is a 35 Whelan Imp.
I think I will end up with an improved 280 case necked to 30 cal or maybe an 06 based improved reamer pushed further in the chamber to take full advantage of the length of the 9.3 x66 case.
Thoughts please gentlemen?????????/

Sorry forgot to mention weight--------my fly rifle is set up for benchrest. So the rifle is well under 17lbs.
If I was to build up a dedicated rifle for the Fly, and I wanted an 06 based caliber what advantage would there be in building a heavy rifle?
thanks guys

Malcolm

Personally for me, I think I would struggle shooting a 30-06AI or even a 30-284 in a lightgun.

The recoil and the follow up shot would be a big disadvantage to myself. I am not heavily recoil shy, but when talking benchrest, the recoil I think effects my shooting.

If you can shoot them, by all means do.. I think you will have an advantage over other LG shooters using 6.5mm and 6mm.

I'm keen to get my 6.5-284 underway, to see how I hanlde the recoil of it. I do think it will be fine.

Then I'll be interested in putting a 284W barrel on it, shooting the Berger 168 VLD at 2950fps!

These would be my picks for a big caliber in a lightgun. 30-284, 30-06AI, 284, 280AI. If you are interested in a wildcat, improve the 284 case.

Any of these calibers I feel you will need the weight as close to 17lbs as you can.

If I were to build a heavygun, the 06 case would not even get a look. It would be a 300Ackley, or a 300WSM if wanting something smaller.

The Dasher is unreal to shoot. Tracks excellent, the follow up shot is easy. I am going to try the machinegun technique at Canberra, rattle the rounds down as quick as the conditions allow.

I am toying around with the idea of a wildcat as well. A long necked Dasher using the 6.5X47L brass.

Cheers
