Had a bit of LR Airgun shooting today.

Decided to test out some ballistic software I had for my iPhone so out comes the chrony and so does my 17cal Anschultz airgun.

It is only a little thing but I thought that would be good as I don't have to shoot real far out to get those pellets really dropping.

Turns out it does an average of 701fps with 7.1gn Silver Bears.

Once I entered the data into my ballistics program it told me to aim 10 inchs high at 50m (airgun sighted in to be dead on at 20m) by the second shot I was hitting the 8 inch tin lid that I Was using. After hitting it three times I took it back to 70m where there was a huge 33inch drop. About 3 shots now and I was on target!!

If only I had a mildot scope on the airgun it would have been much easier.

It only goes to show you that knowledge is power it would have taken me atleast 12 shots before I hit that target without knowing its trajectory.

BTW the 700fps from the muzzle pellets ended up at the target travelling 256fps for around or below 1fpe and it took half a second to get to the target. The ballistics of airgun pellets are SHOCKING!

BTW the 700fps from the muzzle pellets ended up at the target travelling 256fps for around or below 1fpe and it took half a second to get to the target. The ballistics of airgun pellets are SHOCKING!

Well Keith, you did pick a pellet that dead heats for last on the BC scale at 0.009 ( No there is a certain Gamo pig pellet with a lower BC that weighs in at 5 gr or so.. ha ha! ).

Contrast an 8.4 gr Exact at 700 fps which will still have a tad under 5 fpe ( 4.96 ) left at 70 yards ... enough to dead a bunny with a head shot! ...... My toy FWB 300S shoots 8.4 gr Exacts 680 fps at sea level and 655 fps at our farm's altitude... One day when conditions are perfect it will be done, maybe next week if weather and bunnies cooperate. Here is an example of its grouping ability at 71 yards from a 655 fps shove off:



And that isn't the best it has done at 655 fps MV ....... So, pellets ain't pellets as they say.

The absolute best air rifle ballistic programs are the Chairgun suite and you can get the programme for those hand held toy computers ...... Take care, Kind regards, Harry.

Nice shooting Harry! I only had the Silver Bears on hand mate and I wanted to test out the program more than the gun. What airgun did you shoot it with? I'll get Lewis to send me down a tin of exacts to see how they shoot!

FWB 300S 10 m target rifle, spring powered, built 1975 ....... 655 fps mv at "Pinelea's altitude"; around 680 fps at sea level with the 8.4 gr Exacts. You may like to get a tin of the 7.9 gr Express Exacts too as they are also very accurate and worth a try.

Best 5 shot 50 yard group with this very low powered springer was very near 1/4", see the 5 shot group on the head of this chicken:

The other groups on the silhouettes shot with the same pellets and rifle... The silhouettes are all scaled in size to be shot at 50m.

Your mention of a "special old rifle" is a bit of an understatement. I knew the FWB 300 was good at 10m, but that's exceptional. It also shows quite well how good the FWB can be for air rifle silhouette.

Oh and thanks for not making me wait too long before reading of how the FWB was going!!

Other group sizes shot in January before we took off to Tassie. These targets have not been photographed yet. :

Thirteen 50 yard selected 5 shot groups with 8.4 gr JSB Exacts at MV 655 fps:
0.45"; 0.45"; 0.50"; 0.55"; 0.55" 0.525"; 0.60"; 0.625"; 0.625"; 0.675"; 0.80"; 0.80"
( RWS R 10 ); 0.95".

And two 50 yard 10 shot groups of:
0.55" and 0.75".

Of course all shot under ideal conditions but out of doors for all but the first six feet, and bench rested on two sand bags..



So now I know the answer to the question of longer range accuracy of the purportedly most accurate old spring powered 10 m air rifle ever made. .... Kind regards, Harry.
