Leanne and I traveled down to Canberra for the last shoot and I walked away with a few conclusions of my own having been beaten by Leanne who used an ex big bore rifle chambered in .308.
I will now build a rifle on a model 70 action and in 300 Winchester Magnum.

Re: Cantberer Fly Shoot !
Hi again,
Forgot to mention that my wife shot smallest group in HG class at 1,000 yards the following day (10 shots in 209mm - thats 8.25") using her 6mm Dasher. The best I could manage with my 300 Ultra was 221mm. Go figure?????

Gooday Peter and a very well done to both you and Leanne. I would also like to mention how well Peter has done with the Dasher for some time now. So obviously there is a way to do it. I also see that Matt Paroz was right there aswell and most likely he was using his old warhorse 6BR. So again it supports the 6 mil can do well claim.
Just a couple of questions for you Pete. When Leanne shot the small group, how close to the centre was it, or how close to the edge was it? The reason i ask this is because i have run a 6BR at 1K and while its grouping ability was good, its precision was ordinary. In other words, it was difficult to hit the center with and keep well clear of the DNF zone. Now i know that 1K is a group predominant match and score is secondary to a lot of us, but i like to stay centered so to not DNF. I have only DNFed once and that was with a 7mm HG where the bullets were on the edge of stabilisation.
The next question is, if you had Leanne kick some butt down there with the Dasher, your Dasher , what prompted you to build a 300 Ultra and why do you think Leanne did better?

Hi Tony and others,
Tony, I have enjoyed your constructive posts and will endeavour to keep my replies factual and informative. Firstly, I will admit to being a 'Power-Freak' since I started shooting Long-Range and have built our rifles accordingly for some time. It was purely by chance that I put my original 6 Dasher together on an old sleeved Rem 7 B/R reject - probably to show those promoting this cartridge that they were walking off a cliff and needed to re-think. Well, I have to tell you that the early results were spectacular - testing at 200 yds gave one (large) hole 3 shot groups and no sensitivity to minor load variations (powder weight/ seating depth). Now to the full 500mtr - same deal - read the flags and the little buggers will go where you want them!!!!!!! In a short time this original (El-Cheapo) rifle which I will refer to as 'Red 7' gets elevated to #1 status. I used it to take most of my wins and places in the last 2 years whether it was in LG or HG class - the day that barrel dies there will be a sigh of relief from most other LR shooters (Maddco of course - as that is all I will use unless stuck).
Moving on - I have subsequently set up a number of other barrels in 6Dasher and 6BR with similar results. Lee-Anne's HG was originally a 6.5x55Improved and was adequate at best. Rebarrelled to 280 Rem Ackley it really shone - but for a limited time. So the current incarnation is a 40lb HG in 6Dasher which is what she used in Canberra at 1000yds (NB - different rifle).
Matt Paroz is the guy that should set an example for most - as he did for me - using a 6BR to flatten most all comers. You read the conditions - you win. Horse-power can make you lazy and waste the theoretical advantage.
As for the 1000yd - we shoot for group - score is a secondary issue - hence I normally opt to shoot 'blind'. Lee-Anne normally shoots 'Marked' but opted for blind on her HG entry. Regretably the target crew marked evey shot on her B target - wasting time - it may have been 600mm instead of 209mm as a late shot went out to the right. As it happens the group was formed low/left with one non-scorer as the results will show. My second group was similarly dis-placed (that's the price you pay for belting 10 shots down in under 30 seconds). I will only use my 300Ultra occasionaly at 1000 now as the bugger takes too long to clean (27 rounds - 3days and 200ml Sweets). Berger 210 @ 3.300 plus destroys a case on a single firing and fouls so bad that it's a real chore - especially since a $1,000 barrel will last no more than 900 shots. Shame is that the bugger is quite accurate at that - but $4.50 a shot pisses me off (even more when my Missus beats me for small group with a 'Tiddler').

Not trying to be contrary but I remember seeing Leannes target card on the frame and it had blind on it but had been crossed out and changed to marked. Everyone assumed Leanne had changed it during the morning crew.

Re: Fly Shoot !
Hi All
Tes Tony I was using the tried and tested BR this barrel is on it's 3rd chamber and now is about 25" long, I think one of the great things about the Br is the barrels last long enough to (a) really tune them and (b) PRACTICE. If I was to get really serious about FLY shooting I'd probably build a 25-30 pound 6 X47 and top it off with a 10-60 March so you can see the bullet holes, but my best scoring target ever has been when I couldn't see the fall of shot.
Some shoots I wonder if I could do better with a bigger caliber but to honest other than seeing the bullets holes (which doesn't always help) I doubt it.

Re: Fly Shoot !
at the fly, I could only see my bullet holes (6.5mm) on the first target and after the mirage came up, no chance. I couldnt see Rinso's either when spotting for him (30cal holes). As a newbie I think its easier if you can see your holes in the fly match but funny enough have more fun shooting blind at 1000yd. I'm still not good enough to be consistent but when I had the flags lined up the same in the record shoot just the way the were in sight in period and rattled off five shots quickly, I got a huge buzz when it came up with all the markers overlapping. Yes a 24cm 5 shot group is no record breaker, and I didnt back up on the next target, but still when good shooters congratulated me it gave the buzz to make sure I come back again.
Rinso, found a Savage target action for $715 to build a cheap gun for Kerrie so all is good

Re: Fly Shoot !
Hi all,
As a final comment on the Canberra weekend -
I goofed on an earlier post - '600mm' for Lee-Anne's potential target was meant to read 160mm. Also on the issue of her shooting 'Blind' in H/G - I have the score sheet in my posession and it is un-altered from 'Blind'. It was her L/G sheet that hat had been amended (by me) and must have some-how been confused with the one for H/G. Little that it matters as she got the small group anyway.
As for the L/G vs H/G issue we need to re-define it to a calibre/recoil debate. Case in point being Dave Groves shooting his 260 Rem Improved 'F' Class rifle in H/G as it is slightly too heavy for the 'Fly' 17lb L/G limit yet is, from a recoil perspective, a typical L/G. Dave flogged the lot of us with his 'A' target - highest target score of 56.?? and smallest group of 1.7?". Not bad for a 'Pip-Squeak' cartridge. Same story - if the rifle is accurate and you can read the wind you will do well, if you rely on 'power' you run the risk of getting lazy on the reading of conditions. Trust me - I have tried it every which-way and although I have had joy with 'Power' I have had to acknowledge that more consistent success has come my way with the 'accuracy' route.
By the way, anyone thinking that they can up the 'ante' a little by going to the 6x47 Lapua may benefit from my findings so far. 6BR vs 6mmDasher shows about 80fps advantage but no change in accuracy. My 6x47 is unlikely to face-off at a major shoot as it's extra 100+fps is not worth didly-squat when compared to the other two for accuracy. After years of trying with the std 243 Win and derivatives I am convinced that the loss of precision is not worth the extra fps.
