FX STORM VS BEER CANS!

Post by Ackley Improved »

Well, I've had the FX STORM for a while now, rattled a few pellets thorugh it , but I had a pretty bloody good day with it today. Mowed down a couple of sparrows.... gives them a arse wipping!

The Airgun is a FX Storm, 22cal. It is topped with a Gerholdt & Reuss 5-20x50 Scope. I also bought the FX hand pump to top the tank up!

I was pretty keen on the FX Cyclone to start with, but after a small issue with the Storms coming in instead of the Cyclones, I bought a Storm from Lewis. At this point I would like to thanks Lewis. He helped myself out a great deal!

I am happy with the Storm after putting a few rounds through it. The only thing that I really can say that is a pain in the arse when first starting to use the rifle was the pump action to load another pellet. If you grip it tight and pull it hard aginst your shoulder you will cycle the action loading another pellet into the barrel. So, you end up with two pellets in there. This is due to the cycling of the action is done through the grip area of the rifle. It is thumbhole stock which aids this.

Once you get used to it, it is a pleasure to use. It is also very very quick for follow up shots. The claim to fame from FX is that this rifle can shoot all 8 shots in 3 seconds.. thats quick for a non-semi auto.

The mags are made from metal, which I like. No plastic! They are very easy to deal with, and load into the rifle no problem. They hold 8 pellets. It is hard to keep track of how many you have fired through the thing, and accidentally have fired it a couple of times with no pellet chambered. Get carrieda way in the moment! Comes down to keeping track of them I guess.

The trigger is two stage and can be adjusted down to a nice light weight. It is really nice actually.

Now, I am guessing you want to know about the hand pump. Honestly, it is not that bad. The first fill does take a while, but if you are smart enough, and dont let it go below 140BAR it is quite easy to fill back up to the 200BAR. This 200BAR to 140BAR is around 3 mags, or 24 shots at full power.

These FX airrifles have three power setting. Thanks to Lewis I have the results of this airgun over a chrony.

Checked the power with JSB Exact 16.0 gns
619FPS 13.6FP
779FPS 21.6
910FPS 29.4

On the low power setting, I am having trouble with the Storm shooting good groups. I just cant get it too. On the middle range, or flat out, the groups shrink to putting 5 under a 5c at 39m (dont ask).

Also, after todays little effort, I ran the tank down to about 120BAR. I noticed that once under the 140BAR that the accuracy of the airgun dwindled on high powder. It was no where near as accurate! I am not to sure if it could be low velocity and these pellets or what. Might grab some lighter weight pellets of Lewis and see what happens. Just seems low velocity and these JSB pellets out of my Storm just dont work. BUT, dont worry when its going.. its bloody unreal!

The scope is great. Easy to use, nice and clear and I cant really fault it. It has a job and it does it well. If I were to buy again, I would most likely go to just a 3-12X50! You dont need 20X, no even at 100m!

Today I went for a bit of a shot with it. As said, nailed a couple of sparrows, which it is like a grenade hitting them. Feathers everywhere. You know when you hit! Longest shot around 40m. Closest... would have felt the wind in his feathers.

From the house fence, there is a dam which offers a nice shooting range. I did not take a rangefinder today.. and I wish I did. Next time I will to check. I stepped it out, big steps and kept them as even as possible. It ended up being 76 step. I measured my steps, which came out at around 1.3m. For this estimate, I dropped it back to 1.25m. 50mm less to be conservative. It works out to around 95m (will check though).

I sent my younger brother out to put up some beer cans full of water on the dam bank. It took about 5 shots to get the right elevation just using the mildots in the scope, which at 12X was 2.5. Wind was very little, enough to just feel on your face. F^%$ hot though!

Upon the first pellet hitting at 95m odd, it gave me quite a surprise. It hit with some force blowing water out into the air and rolling the can. This is the good bit, the next three cans were taken with three shots, no problem. Leaning against a wooden frame made it a little easier.. but still bloody hard.. and I did miss a few let me tell you!

After the first round, sent my brother back up to replace the cans. To hot for me to walk.. and he had the 4wheeler.

This time, 3 beer and one redbull ful of water. Below are the results of these cans being hit at 95m odd. It is pretty nasty, and I would believe could take down a rabbit. On a steady hold, I would even go out and say at 100m you'd have a pretty good chance of head shooting with the FX Storm! Also, everytime the pellet passed through the can full of water at 95m.

Also, my younger brother has a Gamo CFX .177 air rifle. It has a 4X scope. It too was hitting the cans (not the second lot in the photo) with not to much problem. It did not have the knock down power obviously and took a greater time to reach the target. It was good to see.

Anyway, here are a few photos. Enjoy!

Very interesting way that action works. and i can see why you double load sometimes. I will say thats VERY impressive damage on the cans at 95M. If it can go through 2 sides of a can and 7CM of water i cant see why a bunny's head will cause any issue at the same distance.

Ackley Improved have you worked out how many pumps are required per shot at each power setting?
What is your record speed for 8 aimed shots?

GRIMO.. it surprised me one hell of a lot the knock down power to say the least! Another thing that was a little surprising is when you miss  , occasionally you get a ricochet and makes that high speed wizzing noise, at 95m. So the pellets are still really moving out there!

Seantheaussie... I have not counted how many pumps per shot.. I just pump it up to 200BAR from 140BAR and go for gold. It would be lucky to be 5 mintues! I have not tried firing the shots as fast as I can.. yet.......

I am now engaged with long range airgunning to not worry about fast shots!!! Its awesome!

Hey Lewis, whats a shit hot airgun PCP with more velocity and also high accuracy! Could go for another for this long range work!

Cheers

great shooting

what did you do when you double loaded them??
shoot them off or did you push them out with a cleaning rod?

if you fired them off- what sort of accuracy did you get??
I was never game to fire off a double load in my Excaliber and touch wood I haven't had one in the .25 cal

seeing how well the JSB's have opened up the cans I'd love to see what a Crow magnum on full power would do

Yes, after the latest projects are complete, I feel a Theoben would be nice! Sign me up!

AI, try the 21gn H & N barracuda pellets too as they shoot really well in my FX cyclone. A bit slower than the 16gn JSBs but at least as accurate and more knock down power I reckon. Incidentally I chronographed my loads and from memory high power was about 32 ft/lb. Also I found as the pressure dropped below 130 bar, accuracy was still good but the elevation dropped a little. I agree the hand pump is high quality & easy to use, but with the number of shots your chewing through you may want to look at a scuba setup eventually, but you've got the right idea to recharge at about 140 bar and then it doesn't take much pumping. Guns & Game did a review of the storm a few years ago, and he nailed a hare at about 100 metres with one shot by just aiming a little higher. They are great airguns that's for sure... :D
