As con said my rifle had over 80 man hours in it. The sights and barrel band were totaly machined from solid stock, the barrel had to be specialy contured, new stock bolts were made to handle the recoil, as well as having two mercury recoil reducers and a good quality recoil pad fitted. Also the action needed to be opened up to take the large diameter of the round, add to that the blueing and 24 carrot gold line on the iron sights and it adds up VERY fast.
I have plans to take it up to the NT on buff if I can get access to a property, and then maybe to Africa after a "real" buff if I keep getting pipeline work and can afford it. I was looking at doing a safari after plains game so I might be able to stay an extra little bit and get a buff, thats if the PH is happy for me to hunt DG with a single shot, even if its a real thumper. Otherwise I'll just have to take the .416 Rigby and 400 grain TSX's at 2700 fps. I think it would be more fun to take the .340 wby for plains game and the .577 for the buff.

Re: AussieSteve's 577NE varminter
mate please dont take my post the wrong way, i love the rifle! i have a think for barrel bands and open sights.
i was just saying its WAY out of my league so i will have to stick with a cheap thumper.
The cost is certainly evident when you see the photo's and im sure they dont do it justice, i guess its a bit like building an engine any wally can screw 400hp out of a 350 chev on the cheap but for it to be built well function as it should and reliably then you have to pay.
Some people probly thaught i was mad putting 15k worth of extras into an 80 series cruiser years ago, but thats what i wanted adn it couldnt be brought at the time

Hey Thomo, wasnt being funny sorry if thats the way I came off. I just thought a breakdown of costs and what is needed on such a rifle would be interesting to those who may want to build somthing along these lines one day. Just let them know what they are in for so to speak

Nah wasnt taken that way Steve, the tall poppy syndrom is alive and well on internet forums and if you spend 6k on a rifle the YOU want adn are going to enjoy then alot of knocers will tell you why you didnt need to and a $700 HOWA would be just fine. just letting you know that all though i cant do it hats of to you fro building something differant and just what you want.

Spoken like a true 'sub-calibre rabbit rifle' believer. Better run for cover now before I get sprayed!!

Con, your missing the point, these expensive rabbit calibres are all about pin point accuracy, not spraying

Yeah mate, Aussie Steve also had a Clancy (I think) barrelled 204Ruger that seemed to hit where it was aimed a bit too well for my liking and at considerable distance!!!
