7-08 remington for me. My rifle is as accurate as the 22-250 I used to own. 120 V-max for varmints and 140 BT's/accubonds for big stuff. Could almost get away with a one gun outfit if I had one scope for varminting and one scope for hunting for it on QD rings

Hard Choice, If you could only have one then it has to be somthing that will cover big and small..

I recon id have trouble parting with my Sako .223 its covers most.. Though a little heavy for walking with.

.22lr's are defanatly a must in anyones safe.. Love coming home and knocking a box of rounds off for something to do..

7x57mm Mauser

Developed in 1892, the 7x57mm is the Granddaddy of all smokeless powder cartridges today. The Yanks got flogged by a small force of Spaniards using the 7x57mm, which made the Yanks develop the 30-06. The British got a rude awakening fighting the Boers armed with the 7x57mm, the Brits had to rethink the 303 round and subsequently develop the Mark 7 round. The 7x57mm is a brilliant and proven European and African hunting round – it was very popular for deer and plains game. And finally no one can dispute the marvels of Sir Walter "Karamojo" Bell taking 1,011 elephants with the 7x57mm (& British badge version the 275 Rigby). Although the 7x57mm is as not common today, the equivalent in a short action is the 7mm-08.

Drew

I'm getting a 284 Winchester built which is more of a 'short action' match for the 7 x 57 I think?

However, my favourite cartridge at the moment is my 20 Practical. Went shooting on Sunday morning and nailed 34 bunnies near Yass. Some out at 240 metres (measured) with the GPS. It's all good!

For me its the .17 remington i just cant fault it, shoots flat and hits like lightning, for anything upto feral dog or dingo its my choice, favourite load is 22.5 grns of ar2206h, cci primer and hornady 25grn hp.

All have their attractions ....but 17 hmr

like a flatter shooting .22

I am relaxed shooting with it from offhand and prone and hence will take shots I would not otherwise.
Has enough range for 75% of the shots I would like to take
Does not scare everthying for miles - including neighbours
As soon as the bullet hits the ground it destabilises rips itslef apart - less worries of pills going to unfortunate places - probably even less than a .22lr

Only disadvantage to .22lr with subs is that it should really be matched to some ear protection.

To date I'd have to say the 25-06, it may be because of the rifle I own (rem 700 VSSF) but man its a top cartridge, using 75gn V Max for pizza's and up to 117gn SST's for the bigger stuff and shoots any load as tight as the last.

As this is AusVarmit my vote goes to the swift as well. Still regret selling the last one I had.
Velocity and accuracy everything needed for varmiting.
