308 loads?

Just curious what everyone feed's their 308's? Im thinking of using 180gr pills for close range scrub work. Wont be using it all that much so will be intersting to see what success people have had usng different brands of factory ammo as well as handloads.

42.5gr 2208 with 165 gr Sierra Game King BTHP
43.8gr 2206 with 155 gr Sierra Palma Match
43.5gr 2206 with 155 gr Lapua Scenar
Just this morning I loaded 40.5 gr of 2206 under 168 gr Barnes X Triple Shock, which should be a mild load but pretty accurate. I'll give them a go at the weekend on a property up the Cape and let you know how I fare. Might take that load up a bit depending on how I go. They are just a bit too expensive for ladder testing to settle on an ideal load.

In the past I have tried 180 grain projectiles (Game Kings soft point) but didn't really see the advantage. If nothing else, they sailed straight through pigs and horses and I had more runners than I ever had with 150 or 165 gr projectiles. Perhaps you have to load a .308 pretty hot to make the best of a 180 grainer and I don't really see the point. Maybe I'm a sceptic but I have my doubts about the "brush bucking abilities" of somewhat heavier bullets in 30 calibres. If twigs are in your way, use a 45/70, 416 Rigby or .458 WM or something similar.

Just my thoughts, other may use nothing else but heavy projectiles with great success.

43gn 2206, 150gn Sierra GK SPBT. Rem 700 Factory ADL. This load shoots OK- under 1moa. I've only had this rifle for a short while and its earmarked to be rebarreled to 7mm-08 soon so I havent put any work into load development.

I have some 180s that I may load up soon but I only shoot pig, goats etc so I reckon they are a bit heavy and I dont need to the extra recoil.

I cannot get the 150s to touch the lands in this rifle. Not sure if its just long throated or if its been shot out. Still groups Ok so I think its the former.

I've heard good reports about the corelokts. Good value and kill well. How do they shoot accuracy wise?

In my old Ruger Mk1 they will shoot sub 2" at 100. Given that my bench technique isn't as it once was, a good shooter should crop that dramatically. Bear in mind that I don't know anyone that can shoot that well off hand anyway

In my rifle Rem m7 the Sierras shoot slightly better groups than the Corlokts off the bench, try and pick 1 or 2 mm difference in the field. I cant.

My "old load" is pretty slow yeah .... But I point to its effectiveness on pigs, donkeys and a pair of scrub bulls and at least one buff

150g b/tip= 46.5g 2208
165g b/tip= 46g 2208
Both sub moa (half if I'm on with the 150g) in my 26" rem varm. barreled winnie 670. oal = 71.12mm.
Can't explain the small diff. in powder for a fair diff. in bullet weight, just seems to be what my baby likes best, no signs of pressure on the 165's either.

Hmmmm, as ive only started out in reloading not so long ago, being none the wiser, Ive been referring to an OLDER Nick Harvey manual, which tells me that max load of 2208 with a 155g pill is 43g. Now i feel a little disheartened as ive made up 9 different loads, starting at 39g working up to 43g at .5g intervals. Seems after reading this that i might be better of starting at around 41/42g. Any ideas or help would be greatky appreciated. Might start with updating my manual!

Based on my rifle (43gr 2208) was my "old" favourite load that shot and killed very well. A lie detector test a while ago revealed an average of around 2500fps with the above.... I think you will find that you would be better off starting somewhere around 44gr and working up from there.

ADI list 44gr as a starting load to a max of 47.
