Baikal IZH-18MH But Confused

Post by pommy »

Am in the middle of puchasing a Baikal IZH-18MH .223 break action, single shot rifle :D . The problem I am having is I've managed to find an owners manual on it, but specs are very limited ie no barrel twist etc. :( , I want to start making loads for it but not sure if I should use the ADI data for .223 rem or not. Has anyone had one of these rifles and/or can you offer some advice as to how I should proceed and with what load, projies etc.

No reason why you cant use any rem 223 data. To measure the rate of twist you can use the cleaning rod and tight patch method- bit of maths and you get pretty close.

I reckon you would be best loading the 40gr bullets in the 223, enjoy the flat shooting fun!

should use all standard 223 factory ammo as it's a hunting rifle not a target gun

so build something that replicates a 223 factory round and go from there

or grab a box of 50 JHP american eagle- if that works well- try and duplicate it

G'day Pommy I'd agree with Ogre, as a hunting rifle it would probably (not defanaintly though) have a 1;12 twist. I reckon you couldn't go wrong with 50-55gn'ers.
I think that I heard that they are a very strong action, but someone else might confirm this.

Not a bad little write up of them in the Latest G&G. Should be a lot of fun, as already said 50's or 55's or go the real safe flat shooting option of some 40gr noslers

being in sunny QLD- have to ask- whats your main vermin/game you are going to hunt with it??

I use american eagle factory 50 JHP in my .223 now becasue for the price you used to be able to get it for the time spent relaoding was better spent elsewhere - like driving to the properties to actually do the shooting.

pop most ferals in the head with this load and they will have a dirt nap
but if larger things are n the list- you might want to have a look at the 64 grain factory hunting loads

Go onto the Nioa website and D/l their ammo cattle-dog

it lists a fair few 223 loads and there is a 64 grain hunting load there

Winchester used to make a 64 grainer too

These heavier factory loads give you a bit more FPE and projectile performance becasue of their stronger construction on ferals/game than a 50 grain varmint grade projectile will

these 64 grain load are designed to work in a standard 223 twist which is 1:12
Tom Varney use's the winchester laod in his 223 for his feral dog shooting

When I used to laod for the 223 I use Hornady 60 grainers either the HP or the SP or sometimes the V-max
I have a few 60 V-max left over if you would like a few to try out

thanx for the tips guys, actually got her now. unfortunately ogre I'm still searching for that elusive property so only shooting paper at mo booking a pay farm as soon as back from long weekend seems only way to get to shoot ferals instead of paper for me at the mo. Will keep you up to date.
