What is your favourite cartridge and why?
Thought this might cause some discussion, maybe some different point of views!
You can only list one... your one favourite...... and you must give a reason.. and "just because", is not enough!
I'll start..
20Vartarg..... This little caliber has really impressed me.. I mean really impressed. Out to 250m, its darn flat and very predictable. When shooting, even with the scope on 25X, you can watch the shot connect through the scope. The rifle just does not move.
It uses only 18.5grains of powder, and shoots the 32Vmax at a good 3700fps without any pressure signs. A little more powder, and it would go around the 3800fps I predict! Cases are easy to form, just neck down the 221FB, load and shoot.
For small game like rabbits, crows, or even foxes, this little case has got it covered.
A guy very well known on another forum shot a couple of rounds through it today, and he is sold. He could not believe the performance out of the little case, and how quick it got to the target! I bet he is trying to work out how to get one himself!
20 Vartarg, 110%....
Cheers

Re: What is your favourite cartridge and why?
Hmmmm soooooo many to pick from.
It use to be 22-250 hands down for myself due to the accuracy and lack of recoil but since getting my 308 shooting 125s it is quite pleasant on the shoulder and the projectile weight can be increased if needed.
So at the moment it is 308 but time will tell if I go back to the 250

The Daddy of the 270win and 25-06.... The mighty 30 odd 6 Simply because of its diversity. It can be loaded with 85gr'ers sent at blistering speeds and in the next breath you can load 250gr woodleighs and smake big game with confidence... i think it has the widest range of projectile weights i have seen....
Thats why its my favorite
Cheers BB

Lovely little cartridge, for my style of hunting/shooting nothing beats it. Cheap to feed, bench rest worthy accuracy, just short of the 223 in velocity but it is not noticeable. I think the thing that makes it my favourite is because of the confidence I have in using this gem! My Win Mod 70 Heavy Varmint is such a brilliant gun my accuracy rate with this rifle would be so much more then any other rifle I own. I just love it and I will never get rid of it and I probably will never change it!

Re: What is your favourite cartridge and why?
500Nitro - 500 x 3" case
1. Because it IS a big step up from 470 Nitro and anything over .510 has a
MUCH bigger effect on game and it shows.
2. Everyone has a 470 Nitro but not everyone has a 500 Nitro
(I was going to say 505Gibbs but only one so it has to be 500Nitro)

Re: What is your favourite cartridge and why?
Would have to say the 17 Ackley Hornet. Have been a long time admirer of the Hornet cartridge and currently have both a standard and a K-Hornet in the safe. But always had a hankering for a 17A-H after reading an article by John Robinson many, many years ago.
Went one better and scored a custom Martini with a Shilen No5 profile barrel and hand carved stock. This rifle was built for a benchrest shooter and he used it for a yer or two before having a BRNO ZKW465 built up in the same calibre.
Much like the 20Vartag, this cartridge is capable of producing blistering speed for next to no powder burnt. Sharp crack upon firing, no recoil, watch the underground mutton get smeared.

Re: What is your favourite cartridge and why?
Sentimentally, it would have to be the .30-06. It was the first rifle I ever fired (thanks to my big brother for that scope eye!) and the rifle used to belong to my father, it now sits in my safe.
However, more recently, I have to admit to falling for the .204. What a cartridge/calibre. It truly is point, pull and hit!

KJD pretty much summed it up for me as we share a great taste in Rifles and cals.
My 243 and 308 will get used more without a doubt but nothing beats the feeling of droping a cotton tale on the high side of 350 yds with a Triple duece.

Oh bit of a toss up but I love my .223 Rem ADL with a slee thumbhole stock. 5 Rnds at 100 one raggered hole. Redmist that is just teasing, my ideal home sit on my back porch and shoot.
