G'Day Jason,
I use new clean garnite sand available from sandblasting suppliers or sand blasting shops. Usually comes in 20kg bags like cement. Readily available and relatively cheap. Check in the yellow pages for more info.

used sand is very fine and leaks out of the seams.

Hope this helps

Hi Jason,

It depends on what you are using it for, if it is competition benchrest "heavy sand" (ie zircon) or equivalent works very well and does Garnite, some swear by plain old beach sand. If it is for general use beach sand is usually fine and easy to come by.

Whatever you use just make sure that it is very dry before you start and use an funnel and pack it in there. A tip to help it flow when filling your bags is to mix some talcum powder with the sand.

Hope that helps...

just a question about using beach sand, will it have to be washed to remove some off the salt or can it just be put in un washed?

Wash it.

Or get it from a fresh water creek or river.

Murray is a good place.

Tikka, you can buy washed sand from any landscape supplies or bunnings, eg washed sydney sand (used for rendering) and it is usually bone dry in the form of a 20kg bag.
