Wolf Eyes Sniper

With th eminent arrival of an Anshltz 1517dhb and a HW50 (from Native Hunter) . After a bit of reading here I decided a tatical torch was on the won`t need ,have to have list.
A phone call to Glen C at Wolf Eyes was placed.Now this bloke knows his torches and a Sniper 260 with spare battery, charger, m2 mount and ribbon switch was paid for by the dreaded credit card the time was 4.15 pm.Glen must have run to the post office because it was in my mail box Friday man that`s service.Specs for the torch are

Next up was a field test with conditions far from perfect as anyone in south east NSW knows we had a rain event on Friday and here we had 51mm of much appreciated rain .Hooked up the torch on my 34 year old winchester 22 and out I went.First up was a short stroll to the shearing shed where I was beaten by 2 older rabbits who made it through the netting fence and into their homes So next was a wonder down the paddock towards the front gate where I was able with much cunning and skill to stalk up on a pair of rabbits each was despatched rapidly .Picked the Bunnies up and wondered home to my JD which had been waiting patiently in the fridge. All up maybe 15 mins of exerise .Light performed very well in very trying conditions I could quiet easily see the bunnies out to 50 odd meters with eye shine had a lot more trouble seeing them through the rain soaked scope lens.Am going to give it another try on sunday night with hopefully a dry night Photo`s to follow

Missed, I think I will suggest that everyone tests theirs with a bottle of JD I like your style, perfect use for this setup, 15 minutes exercise with next to no preparation required. Cant wait to see your thoughts in some good weather

ak, theres something wrong with that top picture. the bottles nearly full! how much did u pay if u dont mind me asking? thinkin of getting a smaller torch as im finding it to annoying taking the 170 out when ive just got the dogs.

17 HMR,There is a good reason the bottle is near full it is a simple equation alcohol+rifles= stupidity.Put the rifle away enjoyed the JD. Give Glen C a yell good bloke to deal with and when I offload my Maglites another wolfeye`s will be on the way.Next time maybe a Rattlesnake a defender or a.............you know how it goes

Missed any more info on the sniper?

Im looking at one (should get some funds for my birthday just after xmas) but I might also consider using it on my 17hmr for up to 100m at night. Does the sniper have the guts to be able to see this far or is it only 50m or so? I know the ol foxy headlights will probably show up in it, but looking for something so i can see a body, doesnt have to be too bright, just have to be able to see it and make a shot. Unsure of wheather to go a sniper 260 for 50m bunny work or a raider 380 for a bit longer or a rattlesnake....

Brad I could see a rabbit in the beam at 93 metres.That was after he moved and I saw the flash of white.My eyes are nearly 50 though .I know what your thinking I to thought of a Rattlesnake but I think the Sniper 260 kit as Glen C sold me is good.It is not a 170 lightforce but you can`t put a 170 in your pocket with a spare battery and ammo either.The sniper is a handy light with the lower power settings for reloading mags finding your car keys and whatever else only thing I would do differently is get the tactical switch as well as the ribbon switch.

Brad was thinking today at work the rabbits here move of real quick when they here the vehicle so shots are taken out to 100 metres.But I have found with the Sniper and a stealth approach I can and have got to within 5 metres .Another thing to think about is that most of your shots will be offhand and a rabbit at 100 metres is a pretty small target .I don`t doubt that the Sniper 260 is good enough at that distance but doubt I would be everytime .Something else to consider is that the Sniper is good for 2 hours at 100% the Rattlesnake is good for 45 mins(incandescant).As Ogre said a spare battery is about as big as a bic lighter for the Sniper and the Rattlesnake takes three.

I ordered it over the phone 2 days b4 xmas, and it was in my hand the next day.
How good is that.

I too picked up a Sniper 260. Glen had it on my doorstep the morning after i ordered it! Full marks for some outstanding service, Glen. The only downside is that a glut of orders had emptied his stock of mounts, and i won't see one until later this week.

Never mind, where there's a will there's a way, and i headed out last saturday to give it a run. Using some standard electrical tape to protect surfaces, and some vulcanising rubberised tape for securing, i soon had the torch mounted below the barrel.




To be perfectly honest, this little device surpassed my expectations. I opted for the smooth reflector version, and on a known-distance property i could easily see the base of fence posts at 120 yards, and lighter colored objects a good bit further than that. My rifle was a 22 rim, but had it been an HMR i would have had no hesitation taking shots at 120+. I would be extremely interested to see the effect through a large objective scope - a 7x50 meopta for example. I was using a 6x40 and felt that the torch limits exceeded the light gathering ability of the modest quality optics.

A couple of observations though. The bunnies seemed reluctant to sit under the light. I suspected that they found the intensity of the white light uncomfortable and would get on the move rapidly. Glen offers a filter that may well prove a better option, but i dare say the range will drop somewhat. With the 22lr, this is not a big issue since 100 yards max is the viable range imo.

The other thing is that if you like to hold foxes just on the edge of the illumination, then a fixed mount makes this problematical, to say the least. Whether it may be possible to make the torch "pointable" i don't yet know. Fortunately, on the night, the redcoats proved less bothered by the light than the cotton-tails. But i'll leave that for the hunting story that's in the wings.

Overall, i can't recommend these things enough. they give a portability and handiness hitherto unknown. I carried mine around, complete with bipod, on the shoulder in comfort. You don't need a battery pack on your belt. And the balance of the rifle is more or less unchanged.

I've spotlighted from a vehicle, but i have to say that i enjoyed the freedom and independence of the other night even more. try one, and get out there.
