Well after 11months 1 week of being part of this forum.I have decided to buy what is probably the most popular posted about calibre.The 17 HMR,So what I was hoping for was some knowlegable input into my purchase.Regards brand, mounts and scope any input would be much appreciated.

Depends on how much coin you want to spend mate.



Budget:

Marlin or Savage, blued with either heavy or regular barrel with timber stock - about $450.

Mid priced:

Stainless Marlin or Savage with synthetic or laminate stock, about $650.


Upper end:

Stainless Savage with thumbhole laminate stock, about $800.

CZ Varmint blued, walnut stock, heavy barrel about $800.

CZ American, blued with walnut stock and regular barrel about $800.

Rugers in various finishes about $1000.

Anschutz in various models about $1200.


Scopes: once again, depends on your coin but IMO a 4-12 is a good starting point for a HMR. Some blokes are going really big with scopes on these guns though. There's no recoil to speak of with these guns, that said you do need a clear scope for picking up small targets like rabbits in amongst grass, with their heads sticking out of holes etc. A base level scope IMO would be the likes of a 4-12 Bushnell Banner, with the sky being the limit at the upper end.

Mounts - The Savage rifles all come drilled and tapped for Weaver style mounts so there are tons of options. The Marlins are grooved for regular "tip off" mounts but are also drilled for Weaver blocks.

CZ's and Anschutz are grooved for "tip off" mounts and there are various makes and materials.

Perfect scope 4-15x42 or 3-12x42 sizes. Marlin and Savage are really good buys and will shoot very very well. To be honest, unless you really want something flash, I cant justify a CZ or weatherby anchutz or anything like that.

Thanks for the reply Fenring and Brad,well I was leaning towards something a bit flash with quality optics.I only want to buy this once have it use and hand it onto my boys when the time comes.But why do they only make them with 5 shot mags

Fenring yes mate 9 shot rotary.It is leading the pack in that area But for a grand and they need bedding and trigger work.

Marlins come with a 4 and a 7 shot mag.

The weatherby mark 23 or what ever they are called are really nice rifles. They are actually an anchutz action but badged weatherby. Very nice stock and blueing. Would be on top of my "expensive" hmr list.

But again to be perfectly honest, fenrings thumbhole savage has nothing wrong with it to take all those bunnies and they look good too. Adjustable trigger.... My marlin has shot a 4 shot 0.3 with 20gr gamepoints- havent tried ballistic tips yet as it shoots so good. Stainless fluted barrel and grey laminate stock. They look just as good. I reckon there is no need to pay over 800 for a rimfire, especially one that will go for walks and in the ute, possibly getting a scratch or two. They arent like a 22 where you can ping multiple shots off at a target. You dont need to. One shot in the vital zone on any bunny and its lights out. Same with foxes. Dont know about cats, but pigs drop too.

Shame there wasnt a leupold version of the sweet 17 scope. a 3-15x42 illuminated reticle with the sweet 17 capability with a top notch lens quality and warranty to match. I would order one straight up.

Yes Brad I looked at a weatherby earlier this year and they are niceBut the stock finish IMO is a bit to garish.

Missed there is a review of the Marlin on the site. I didnt get excited about the ones I felt for the same reason, rattly magazine.

Very happy with the CZ sporter I bought as are the boys.

MAX range is say 150 and after 100 there is a bit of guesswork if its windy so you dont need massive magnification. Of more use IMHO is parrallax adjustment to close range because you will use this for the short range sneaking through the blackberries too.

So I can say that I bought the wrong scope. A fixed 10 power bushnell 3200, lovely and bright, target turrets but parallax fixed at 100m and rabbits 15m are out of focus. You still hit them but they are out of focus!!!

If $$$ are no object something with parallax adjustable down to 10m like the loopy efrs. Think Clearidge do something specially for rimfires, ask Jon at TOZ

For optic`s I was thinking of a bushnell 4200 3,5-10 or an eqiuvalent so a vortex viper or vx 111.Got a price of a semi local shop this evening for a loopy vx 111 for 500 big ones. Opticzones price is comparable but you know the catch cry by local .

ak, if u want something a little better than normal, but not over the top have a look at the new t-bolts
