The new breed
Re: The new breed
Guys,
A gentle warning from the poor pleb next door to TZ on the benches, yep that's my gun you see in the background behind the new monster. If you come up here to shoot 600 or 1000yrd, don't bench up next to TZ. The one thing he forgets to mention is that the blast effect on the bench next door is like having an air bag go off in your face. Was impressive to see such good out of the box accuracy though.

Re: The new breed
Just an update on the finished gun. Shot its first 1 K today with a 6.60" group and 48.1 first up in some tough wind and mirage using the 200 SMK at 3130 fps launched with a shovel load of Re22 out of the 340 WM cases. Cases are not moving at all which is a lot more than can be said about my old HG and the Lapua 300 Win cases. Shortly i will move on to the 208 Amax for matches as the little testing i have done with them show that they will stabilise and group well in the Lilja 12 twist. At a recent OZ 600 it grouped and scored well enough to win by a fair margin and even knocked of JRs HG being shot by Bobby L while JR was having the time of his life down at our State get together of movers and shiesters .
It's very hard to gauge the potential of the complete package at the moment because the weather has not been all that kind, but what i can gauge it on is by direct comparison of known peforming guns and shooters on the same day. So far it's looking good, but i do hope for some nice weather in two weeks time at our next OZ 600.
Tony Z.
PS. The accompanying pics show the stock forend offset and the completed rifle with its winged keel fitted to the buttstock. The combination of the two IMO allow it to track and recoil like a good HG.

Hey Tony,
I reckon you're onto a good thing with the off-set fore-end . I saw that idea a couple of years ago on one of the US web sites and wanted it in a Kelbly fibreglass......but, no go
Just for a challenge, I reckon you should fit a left-twist barrel
Cheers

Re: The new breed
Kenny, that is a piece of Corian. Slippery as shit and machines easy and can be buffed to a mirror finish. Expensive as hell but with the Rogers Material Supplies just down the road, cheap as it comes. The yanks are using it alot for HG and LG running gear.
Ben, i am in the process of machining up a blank stock with an offset forend and a keeled butt like on my other LG. It will be a mould plug for albow on this forum and hopefully sometime soon there will be composite stocks with both those features available. Alan is already making standard BR composite stocks in the original MacMillan style. The ones i have seen so far are IMO layed up better than the original US ones i have seen. Maybe Alan can post a pic or two here?
I was told a while back that once i went offset i would never go back. That is dead right, i never will for a serious competition gun. There is no torque, no bounce and no compression of the left side of the front bag. But when you get one , you're gunna get into more trouble with the Schmuck, Putz and Shiester law firm
Below is a pic of the Torque Tamer stock recently sent by Dave Tooley to Jeff Rogers for his new LG. This stock has a full 3 inch offset with a four inch forend. No good for FClass, but probably the way of the future for the real big banger LGs which are becoming more and more favoured now. Weight is 1.3 kg.

Re: The new breed
Very nice. Once you have done my F std rifle , I might even look into a tube gun of some sort. I wonder if the offset forend would be any benefit with a 308 or 10kg 284???
Re: The new breed
Rod, Alan N was just around home and we were just figuring out the finer points of the plug for his new offset stock he will be producing in the near future. There will be two versions, both with offset forends, one at four inch wide for the LR guns and the other at three inch for FClass. The buttstock will have the winged keel incoporated into its design like on my other LG, not like the one on this thread. We looked closely at the Tooley stock and used it to compare stability and tracking issues with. No photos as yet, but if all goes well, the stock may be what you are looking for as we built it wide for the big actions now used in LG, so a bedding block should be no problem. At a guess, Alan thinks his finished stock with strengthening rails internally and filler in the bedding area will weigh around 900 grams. The stock blank i have machined without inletting weighed in at just over 2 kg and is in fine ply as it would be if it were to be used for a rifle. About 1.7 kg inletted at best i would think. This is just way too much weight for a stock for the 17 pound classes, so that is why they will be in composite.
Rod if you can get a hold of Marty when he's not in a cockpit of an Airbus or airhostess, can you ask him to give me a call please? As for your question about the block size, that is on the minimum size to be clamped by screws but if glued to the barrel and sealed with O rings, as per Shehane style, it can be screwed through the base to the stock inlet, or simply glued directly to the stock.

Re: The new breed
OK, Tony, I will take one of these synthetic stocks, with 3" fore end , with a barrel bedding block ( as well as the other job we were talking about) if you can get one put together in the near future. It will be for a 1000yd and fly gun in LG class. Drop me a line when you can.
Re: The new breed
Rod, soon as i can i will get a pic of the stock sent off to you. Marty rang and he is back North on the 7th Dec and out of Melbourne where he's been for a while now. He will be getting to some of our BR matches early next year to sharpen up for Bisley 09. I would be waiting for the SSRs to come out before i built anything. I hear change is a coming directed from sore losers and dinosaurs and do you own a bipod? FO numbers might swell yet.

Hi Tony Z and aJR - I really enjoy reading about your work. Keep posting this kinda stuff please. What's the action you've used there Tony ?
cheers
Sam
cheers

Re: The new breed
Sam, the action is one of my own based off a Browning/Weatherby design. Inch and a half diameter and 9 inches long, the action that is . Sort of like a giant BBR but where the bolt head can be rotated to be left, right, dual or drop ported. This one is right port, right eject at the moment.

Re: The new breed
Was talking to Tony a few days back; his lounge room was real interesting; rifles and actions and stuff everywhere.
He's putting a "winged keel" on the 6-6.5X47L he's building for me; he must be near as sick-in-the-head as me!

Well I,m not jealous. The members of Bratz dolls and wiggles toys forum would find my lounge room interesting as well. Doh!!woob614271 wrote:Was talking to Tony a few days back; his lounge room was real interesting; rifles and actions and stuff everywhere.
