Compressed loads - 204R

Post by Sir Snipealot »

In the ADI book, they say that max load for a 32g pill and 2206H powder is 27.7 grains. It also says that this is a compressed load. What does compressed mean?

it means that to fit all of the powder in you either have to use a drop tube so it settles mor compact or tap the case as you pour the powder, again to settle it so the full charge can fit and still give you room enough to seat the projectile.

Others will be able to give you some more detailed info i am sure

G'Day All,
a compressed load is where you have more powder that the case can normally hold.

However, slowly dropping the powder into the case via a funnel where it goes into the funnel in a tangental direction (not straight into the funnel opening but preferrably parallel to the side so it swirls like water going down a bath drain hole) it will stack up inside the case tightly and you can fit more powder in. Do not add powder so fast as to choke in the funnel outlet or you loose the effect.

In BR we use small internal diameter holed drop tubes from our powder throwers and this creates the same effect. Also, gently tapping the side of the case when the funnel is still on it will also settle the powder further inside the case. You may only have around 1-2mm of visible case neck above the powder when done.

When you seat the bullet you will feel some of the kernels "crunch" as they are further compressed. You may even notice with light neck tension that the bullet will move out from the compressed powder. Your case OAL actual increases after loading!

But this is a real 100% density that give excellent ignition and consistent burn usually with great accuracy too.

hope this helps
