Can your girl shoot?

G'day Fellas,

Women make very good shooters, they have a lower heart rate, a greater peripheral vision and they have steadier hands, for these reasons alone the Olympic events were modified to exclude women and men from competing together.

Yesterday our club the Sutherland Shire Small Bore club held it's annual prize shoot for the bench rest class, competitors had traveled from as far as West Wyalong to attend.

The event was ran under the rules of English match (meaning that you shoot three cards consecutively unlike the progressive format used in SSAA events).

It does have its disadvantages in that if you draw the second or third detail you may be shooting in adverse conditions.

The highest score for each card is 200, A grade shooters still struggle to achieve a perfect score on a good day.

We were also graced with the attendance of three shooters from the Woolahra Small Bore Club, may I add of whom recently represented Australia as part of the Australian Bench rest team.

Now many of you have met my Fiance at the Fly events, Leanne has only been shooting for 6 months, Leanne is a B grade shooter or should I say 'was'.

If Leanne had of been shooting A class yesterday she would have come second only being beaten by one point, each of her cards scored 199 with a total score of 597/600 and knocked off the other two shooters from Woolahra.

To cast the shadow further she was using my 45 year old Anschutz 'Supermatch'.

Having come first in B grade Leanne was upgraded to A class.

Now, I really do need pull my finger out.

G'day Sean,
I have found that women, generally "LISTEN" to instructions and apply them making them as a rule better students than blokes.

I've heard it said that you cannot teach a aussie male how to shoot, drive or r**t as they are "born" with the knowledge to be great at all three

Besides, i've been beaten in so many BR and now f class matches by better shooters who just happen to women, that I reckon there is a fair amount of truth to the rule.

Besides, most blokes will pour crap on any girl who can't shoot, so those girls with the guts to have a go are determined to do well and usually flog the guy's! Good to watch others get hammered, but even now it still hurts a little when I get done over in comps!

Testosterone is a really bad thing for shooters! So dont feel bad about getting a lesson in shooting by a girl!

Girls in shooting?
At the Wagga club we have more young ladies than men come to compete.
We had a rimfire 50 yard benchrest group shoot today. Crap windy (10-24kmh) day. I came second in the target class.
Carlos came 1st in the target rifle class with a score of .530. His daughter came 1st in the sporting class with a score of .47something. She is 14 years old and out shoots her dad quite often. (no wonder he shoots in a different class)
My wife could out shoot me if she had the time to practice and compete. She has sat at the bench on the farm here a few times and has shot some great groups with my Brno and Annie.

My Mrs shoots better than me

they only time she doesn't is when the noise and recoil get to much
and if she wasn't looking after the squids so much and could have time to practice - the noise and recoil wouldn't be an issue either

the only small bore I shoot better than her is the HW-90- as she buggered from loading it and has the shakes a bit

I shot 594 out of 600. I picked up second fiddle, I should have been more patient, I destroyed my first card having dropped four to score 196/200.

I did manage to shoot 200 unfortunately it was on my last card.

My excuse was that the rifle hadn't fouled up (I always find that the rifle shoots better when it's had at least 100 rounds through it, although Leanne destroyed that theory on Saturday having shot the rifle before me).

It must have been the wind.

Yes Rinso, I think I need find Leanne a rifle, probably a Feinwerkbau or an Anschutz for small bore and build her something for big bore (After I have the Remington re-barreled by Shane).

What concerns me is that she has expensive taste and has a very, very competitive streak.

Yep the women know a top quality rifle when they see one and they know crap when they see it too.

A little side story.
A mate of mine has a misses that can be anal at times. Once while they were visiting i set up a bench and .22 and targets at 35 yards so that everyone could have a go. She started sprooking the dangers of guns etc, etc, etc.
After I negoatiated with her for about 10 minutes we had her son shooting, then her daughter and finally I talked her into having a go. After about 10 minutes we had to prize the rifle from her hands, while she was shouting to hurry up so she could have another go.
While her son was having his second target I over heard her saying "Peter you should get one of those .22's, there not so loud like your big gun". Anyway see had a few more targets. (All good I supose)
Six months later Pete and wife and kids come for another visit. They arrive while I am sighting in my .22/250. She walks up and says can I have a shot. I said this is a different rifle than last time(she wouldn't be told), I'll be right and jumps into the bench chair takes aim and KABOOM You can imagine her look on her face, she hasn't shot since.

Well if you buy quality up front it will last so its not so bad in the long run. As for the competitive streak, nothing wrong with that and it will give you more incentive as well.

After many years knocking around ranges, especially smallbore, I came to the conclusion that the women who do compete all seem to be good at it.

It occurs to me that one of the primary reasons (apart from what Sean said) is simply that unlike men who assume that they must be able to shoot and keep trying, most women who are not "naturals" give up. I suspect they think that they have better things to do with their time.

This is further augmented by the fact that most women don't get the "boy's toys" side of shooting, so unlike so many of us guys they won't keep shooting just for the toys.

You know the right thing to do would be to get Leanne the good gear and let her do the shooting....

and live your dream through Leanne's achievement's ..................................only joking,I reckon that females have a more relaxed attitude to target shooting,so they place less pressure on themselve's.
