looking to buy a LH 30 cal

Post by Ned Kelly »

G'Day All,
my little bro has just bought a Rem700 SPS in 30-06 for hunting deer, pigs & goats etc. He reckons I need to harden the **** up and come and help him out etc (probably for the carry out on some monster sambar that he'll shoot miles from any track :wink: :lol: )

So here's the idea, I'm a lefty, and want to know which brand of rifle is preferred and who out there in cyberspace has used them and can recommend them from plenty of experience ie Tikka, Savage, Rem etc.

I'd like a Rem700 (cause I got lots of tools/accessories for them) in 308 but 30-06 would make more sense so we can use the same ammo.

So the shopping list is as follows
*LH action, 24" walk about rifle in 30-06
* Scope 2x-7x or 3x-9x or even 2x-10x
* mounts
*rugged, sound design and prefereably capable of 1.5 moa or better with handloads
*adjustable trigger down to say 1.5-2lb (remember I'm use to 2 ounce triggers and cant stand the 2lb jewel in my Fstd 223 :roll: :lol: :lol: :lol: )

So willing to spend up to $1000-$1500 but less would be better since it wont be used often but used hard, no pretty ones just functional and reliable.

thanks in advance for all replies

For that money a T3 Hunter blued or stainless. Light easy to shoot, slick action, easilly adjustable trigger and looks good too. I am 6' tall and about 130kg's and I find it is the most comfortable factory rifle I have shouldered.

I have both a T3 (in 30-06) and a Rem sps (in 223) and I would take the T3 any day of the week.

My T3 shoots around the 1.2-1.3 moa for five shot groups consistently, 1.5 for ten shot groups, this with Highland AX factory ammo. I havent tried any decent load development yet but I got five woodliegh 180gn PP into a hole just shy of 1" edge to edge on my first play with reloads onmy first play with it. Since then every round has hit meat of some description including a 300m shot at a donkey which hit within a few cm of where I was aiming for (more arse than class, I dont think I could repeat that shot too often).

The rem would need to be restocked and have the trigger adjusted by a gunsmith which pushes it out of your budget.

Seriously no contest between these two rifles

G'Day Dr G,
restocking doesn't worry me. I did the Geoff Slee gunstock course and adjusting triggers is no sweat either. Just dont want to do it to a knock about rifle. Just buy, go zero and hunt; probably with factory ammo too.

But I've had Tikkas before M55 .222 and a LH M65 in 308 so I know they are good but didn't know much about the T3's.

I will admit I'm leaning towards the T3 but I want to hear from those who use them regularly and I guess you fit that criteria :wink: :D

thanks mate,

I've got a 243 T3 lite stainless lefty (see avatar.) No complaints, the trigger should go down to 1.5lbs with a twist of the allen key, 3/4 moa no probs, light and good fit at 6'2". Barrel is only 22" but you can get the longer varmint version if barrel length is important. About $1000 for lite and $1400 varmint.

I mostly take long single shots but prefer the lite sporter for its fast point feel.

I've tried a few mates rem's but rate the T3 for fit and trigger and detach mags. (edit: and availability, a lot of lefty models advertised but T3's are actually available at gunshops.)
