Air Rifle time!!

Well, I have decided its time for a air rifle.... something fun......

I have been messaging Lewis (thanks mate), and have decided which way to go!!

How does this sound...

FX Cyclone in 22cal? Looking at the Gerholdt & Reuss 5-20x50 Scope that Lewis has, but time will tell on that one!

Should be good for some target/field work I think. A few power settings, great trigger!

Only thing I am a littel worried about is this bloody hand pump!! Build them muscles.. and no scuba for me!

Should I look at any other accesories for it? Upgrades?

Looking forward to this rifle actually!

my pref is for a Theoben rapid

But as long as the FX is back by the "Lewis factor" you shouldn't have any dramas

Maybe have a look at the HW100's as well- quick fill with a scuba tank- forget the pump
rifles are made to be shot- not used for a cardio workout

Good choice AI in both rifle and scope. With the FX you don,t need to think about upgrading anything on the gun it has it all there. If you are a very fit guy and like working out stick with the hand pump. BUT I would seriously recommend a scuba tank to go on you "To Get" list very soon.
Enjoy your FX they are hard to beat.

I agree with Rinso. Especially for a new rifle that you will automatically have a great time with and want to put a lot of pellets through.

I tired of the pump for my hornet very quickly.

Dive tanks are a truly wonderful thing.

And Lewis has had good adaptors at a good price - I know this, as I got one from him. Hopefully he still has them available.

Nice work Trevor and Welcome, I have a G&R on my R9 its the 3-12 and is wonderfully usefull with the airgun, AO seems fairly accurate and the reticle has centre plus 2 steps in it so is great for knowing what ranges etc My R9 is setup dead on at 10 meters, then an inch high at 25 and this is the first step up on the reticle so is very handy, haven't gone out further with it yet. I too wanted a FX Cyclone but usually Lewis doesn't have them, so when I saw he did it was like awesome, just a pity I aint in any way able to pick one up as a Lewis backed Cyclone can only be good.

Go for a used tank 232 bar would suit with a K valve or a Din valve would be OK for the FX that will cover your needs,they are the most common tank in use.
S/H Tank prices in SA (the only market I know) are from$280 to $360 approx dependent on the tank capacity.go for a 12 litre tank at least. It pays to shop around if you can. refills down here average $7-$10,dependent on capacity.

I maybe able to get a tank fairly cheap, most likely not a divers tank though. A friend works for BOC gas, so I will see. $7-$10 to refill is ok, but again may get it for nothing. How many refills out of 12ltr tank?

I have sent poor Lewis many messages now, and I must thank him for his help.

It looks like the FX Cyclone and Gerholdt & Reuss 5-20x50 Scope. I must say the package deal he put together is a great price also!

I have to admit I have zero experience with the current FX range

I used to own an RWS Excaliber in 22 cal which was made by FX AFIK- Lewis will correct me if I'm wrong- but the Excaliber and the FX 200 were alway put up as the same/similar rifle in reviews I read from the time.

I had lewis set the power to 20 FPE so i could get a good mix between power and shot count out of it.

My current main rifle is a Theoben Rapid MK11 in .25 cal
I use the 500cc tank which has an operating pressure rating to 250 BAR- the smaller 400cc tanks are 205 BAR.
I fill the 500CC tank to a 220BAR fill- only because of the easy to see line on my fill adaptor- and I have not got to a point where I am loosing trajectory from lack of bottle pressure yet.
Let me explain
I fill to 220 BAR and go for a circuit shoot round the property
the most i have used is 4 magazines in one circuit- 48 shots
I get back to the car and fill again to 220 BAR
and do another circuit
When I re-fill the adaptor guage normally shows low 200 high 190 BAR still in the cyclinder
I have fired 60 shots at the cousins farm and still had over 180 bar in the cyclinder.
This rifle was set by Lewis to 48 FPE with the Beeman 31 Grain Kodiak Match.
Thats a 31 grain pellet at 940 odd FPS- thats a serious hunting projectile and speed.

With a sight in chart 70 yard shots are quite easy- even for a hack like me

A good shooter like Yrrah would be able to make 100 yarders no worries

Now the results of head shot rabbits are the same as a 22 LR out to as far as this hack can shoot em- with a lot- and I MEAN a lot less noise than even sub 22 LRs make.

I use a 300 Bar tank
My tank is a Breathing apperatus tank of about 5 litres-
The advantage of a 300 bar tank is the massive increase in air volume for the same weight of tank
232 BAR x 10 litre tank=2320 litres
300 BAR x 10 litre tank=3000 litres for the same weight in tank etc
more air, more pressure- more fills

Also the pressure diff of filling from 232 to a 200 BAR rifle tank is less so you will phyically get less fills out of the lower pressure tank before the tanks equalise in pressure. Once the tanks EQ in pressure you wont get any more fills from the larger tank.

Make sure the shop fills to a full 300 Bar when filling -Some shops try and get the fill done while you are waiting- and the push the fill in quick- that heats your tanks up fast and alters the pressure reading of the tank- when it cools down it reads less ( and is less)
Even if you have to leave it there for a few hours so they can fill in stages to the full 300 BAR.
The place I use has a water bath to keep the tanks cool while filling- or they can fill in stages and let the tank cool between stages.

$7-10 for a big tank fill is about right

before buying a tank make sure your local shop has the ability to fill to 300 BAR if you are going to buy a 300 BAR tank
some older shops aren't set up for the higher fills

if you are friendly with the local fire bregade maybe you can score one of their 6 litre 300 BAR tanks- they weight SFA- but will give you weeks of Rifle bottle fills.

Make sure BOC can fill with breathing grade Clean- DRY_ must be DRY- air fills

DRY is critical
talk more later if you want- be gone for a few hours over the park while it's cool

Find me the size of the FX gun cyclinder in CC and the pressure you want to run it down to ( I suggest 160 BAR) i will use a program I have here to work out how many fills you will get

I think I will just go the hand pump to start with, and then if I need too, will get a tank. It does not worry me having to use a pump!

As for the spec's on the rifle, I only know what is on the FX website!

I see the trigger can be taken to 8oz too.. thats amazing on a air rifle!

I think this rifle is going to be fun!

an 88 cubic feet tank- thats a 10 or 12 litre cannot remember

tank fill pressure 232 BAR
gun tank fill 200 BAR
gun cyclinder capacity- used 200cc as thats the size of the FX2000 and the RWS Excaliber in the table of the program
refill gun cyclinder at 160 BAR

gives 42 refills for the gun using a 232 BAR tank

simply making that a 300 BAR scuba tank- no other variable changed in the program
gives over 100 fills

I have never had a shop charge me more for a 300 Bar fill than a 232 bar one- a fill is a fill.

And with some shopping around theres about $50 difference between a 232 and a 300- all "in test" on the S/H market.

and the 300 BAR should be younger- smaller lighter and have a longer service life.

do the FX have a removable cyclinder??

if yes grab a spare and you just doubled your shot count

I carry the 400 CC cyclinder full to max pressure on the circuit at the farm
have not had to fit it yet to enable me to keep shooting at max pressure and velocity

at my cousins or the orchard I leave the 400 cc in the gun bag

but with a removable cyclinder thats an option-
aside from Lewis' recommendation thats one of the reasons I chose the Rapid
large mag capacity
large shot count
magic trigger
replaceable cyclinders
