Well after much deliberation following some of the stories I had heard for delivery times on Maddco barrels I sent off my order for a barrel to make this project on the 19th of December with fingers crossed that I would be able to get it by the end of January as indiated by Maddco.

Today I got a call from Neville to say that it is complete and will be on courrier tomorrow and here in a day or so :D but I am still to find an action. :(

Al-bow,

WOOOOO HOOOOOO, you are a third of the way there :D

Actually I reckon you are prolly more than a third there as your stock is 'made' and just needs finishing 8)

I am sure an action will not be too far away.

For those who read this and don't don't know it .... Al-bow is making his own laminated stock and is ready to inlet and shape, and it looks darn good from the pics I have seen, how about posting a piccy Al ?

Just wondering who else out there is hooking into building a gun based on JR's post :?: .......you are all very quiet :?

finally found an action

Post by albow »

The last of the pieces are coming together as I finally found an action. I was tipped off about an Omark action today (interstate) and have made arrangements to have it shipped to a
local dealer. :D :D

Once all the paper work is finalised I would hope to have it in a few weeks.

Now it is just a matter of arranging to get the smithing work done and finishing off the stock. Maybe by March it will be ready to go!!

Hi all,
I called Les on Monday to order my omark, Les said he would start a job card and go to see the guy at Belmont. It would be my suggestion to call Les now so he can do it all in one trip.

I take it that we are looking for Omark big bore (308cal) target rifles or actions for this project ? I know a bloke who was heavily into big bore target shooting who has a couple of Omarks and some new stainless barrels ready to screw in. He may want to get rid of them as he hasn't been involved with that discipline for a while now. What would be a fair price to pay for an Omark 308 in good order? Also new barrels ( unsure of manufacturer.) ?
Cheers Jethro

All

As Kenny said I am having a go at knocking out a stock myself with much direction and instruction from both he and JR.

Below are a number of images of the build at varying stages but there is still a long way to go.

Laminates cut ready to glue:

Laminates glued and clamped up:

G'Day Al-bow,
I very much like the look of your stock blank, so I've got a few questions....
1. What plywood did you use, was it marine ply and how thick were each laminate?
2. What was the glue used in the glue up?
3. Do you have any further info on stock construction?
4. What finish will you use when shaping is done?
5. Are you going to pillar bed the action? or is it a glue in? or both?

I'm thinking of making myself a couple of stocks, one for my f class .223 and a BR stock for my .22lr. Any info that you are willing to pass on would be greatly appreciated

Hi Ned

I by no means am an expert as this my first go at this and have gotten alot of information off Kenny.

With regards to your questions:

1. The ply was marine ply and it was 9.5mm thick and is a 7 ply.
2. The glue was a product called Techniglue CA. It is used in boat construction and should be obtainable from most marine supply stores as that is where I got mine. It is a two part epoxy similar to Araldite but has a shorter pot life, from what I have seen so far is better to sand and was less than half the price of Araldite.
3. I have not done anything special about the construction just cut it out and glued it up.
4. The finish I would like to have is natural timber look but that will be determined by the final finish of the ply. If the ply does not come up good enough to clear then it will be painted.
5. I am only looking to do a glue in at this stage.

I designed my profile by looking at a number of stock designs and incorporating the various parts I liked, measuring off my current varmint stock and info from Kenny. If you want the specs then give me a PM and I will send through some info.

Hi Jeff, have you had any result with this yet ? I rang Les Flood the other day and he is not having much success dealing with the QRA. So he suggested to look elsewhere for an Omark. Rang Keith Hills and he's looking for them too - the Canberra club has some kind of new shooter program and they are building Omark based rifles. So it seems they are starting to become sought after ! I'll keep looking...
