Graphic .. JSB Predator .22 damage to a Myna .. Experiment.

Post by Yrrah »

VERY Graphic .. Not for the little ones please....Snapshot reflecting a pellet's instantaneous internal damage to a pest species.

Aim of Yesterday's experiment was to get a window into the hydrodynamics resulting from a pellet's impact WITHIN a small pest bird.

A pest common Myna ( subject )was acquired in the usual way. It was immediately sliced through the breast lengthwise ( sagittally ) adjacent to the keel of the breast bone through to the back to enable the insertion in the slit of a piece of 200 gsm light cardboard. The latter had been soaked in water for 15 minutes prior to the fortunate acquisition of the subject.

.. The subject was then placed on its back on a stand in front of another cardboard sheet and a soft backstop designed to capture a pellet. A safe impenetrable second backstop was also employed.

An expanding JSB Predator 16 gr .22 poly tipped pellet was then shot through the subject at 20 yards and with a POI KE of approx 21.5 fpe.

Subject. Pic taken after the completion of the experiment.

The cardboard was then carefully extracted after separating the surrounding tissue. Shown with pellet and backing sheet.

Results: Well there it is. The hole through the cardboard roughly measures half an inch in diameter. The cardboard is torn to a limit of 1.3 inches. There is extensive fluid wash/ splash on the inserted cardboard, presumably a combination of blood, intra-cellular fluid from other origins, interstitial, perhaps digestive fluids and whatever; also some G ....... the pellet had exited then penetrated the second sheet and been caught in the soft backstop. The latter has a head expansion diameter of 0.30 inches.

Discussion:
# 1. I now don't have to wonder why many dozens of pest Mynas have never shown a sign of life after being hit with an Exact Predator from the Excalibre.

# 2. I wonder about all I have read about innocuous "temporary wound channels" written of as though they close harmlessly behind a pellet that has just delivered considerable energy in less than the blink of an eye.

# 3. The tissue disruption caused by the hydrodynamics of this event as reflected in the "snap shot" seems to have been considerable and would appear to be of much greater consequence than the mere hemorrhage associated with a .22 calibre more "permanent wound channel".

Make of it what you will but factor in that the subject is just 1.7 inches thick and the cardboard was inserted at approximately 0.95 inches from the POI or just over half way through. Presumably there was damage, though perhaps less, on the far side of the inserted cardboard. The spatter on the second cardboard sheet indicates something of the blowout on the far side.

Further background experiment: done some years back now, indicates a JSB Predator energy loss in a similar subject from 28 fpe POI was 19.98 fpe lost to the subject ( 70.5 % ) in 1.6 to 1.7 inches of penetration .. http://www.network54.com/Forum/79537/me ... 26quot%3B-" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Enjoy the read :-( . I hope it gives some food for thought and adds a little to the "wound channel" discussion that appears here from time to time. .. Kind regards, Yrrah.

Well done Harry.........

Your work is always worth a read, as you continously come up with the most interesting topics/targets/challenges/answers and experiments.

I always enjoy reading your posts. Thanks and please keep up the good work. :)

As usual very interesting research Harry.
Judging by the effect on quarry that the .22 Predator has on the Myna, the .20 Cal pellet should be pretty well as effective on small pest birds,Pigeons,Rats and other small game.
They have been a long time coming,I have used .22 Predators some time ago,a few strays that found their way here and was very impressed with them.
The Airgun world everywhere would be a very dull scene with out your persistent efforts.
Cheers Ray. 8) 8)

Thats great work, Always good to know just how effective/devastating the pellets are.

Can't wait to try the .20's in the R9 :)
