500m Fly, anything wrong with this??

What are your thoughts on this.

If I am driving to any competitions from now on ( 500m Fy and 1000yds) , I want to shoot both classes. i.e LG & HG.

Now, this is the thing, what would you say if I shot the same rifle in both classes? Would anyone have any problems with this? Is it, or would it create any debate?

I can see some guys would see it as being an unfair advantage, but is it really? I can not see how it is?

If I turned up and shot the one rifle in both classes, would it give you the shits?

AI, some anal folk I've met would get all upset, but shooting a LG against a HG might put you at a disadvantage, especially in recoil/rifle torque, depending on the caliber.
Ask first, and go from there, mate.


Oh, and as Thomo said, whatever you're selling will be tops! Shame I'm (still) near broke...

Nothing in the rules to stop you it will definately come into weight so no worries .
I have been toying with this idea as well but may have a set of stainless rails to slip on the front to make it ride better in the heavy gun detail.
Just pay the nominations and make sure you sort out which is your heavy gun detail and which is the light.

I'd let you shoot the same gun in both classes at any Canberra event without a second thought. More than likely one class 1st detail, 1 class second detail so you dont have to shift your gear so often.

Rifle meeting what is set out in the rules for each class is all that matters IMO.

Hi Al,
mate just so i'm clear, are you wanting to shoot a light gun in heavy class or a heavy gun in light class. If it's a light gun in heavy class there would be no probs but if you were to bring a heavy gun into the light gun class you might have a complaint or two.

I think its the way to get value for your trip mate.
Shooting your LG in the HG class supposedly puts you at the disadvantage so I'd doubt anyone would complain unless you win too many times in HG.
If I remember correctly PVM shot is LG in both classes at Canberra 1K in July.

I think if you look at PVMs success in recent times it could be directly related to him shooting in the two classes at the same event. You would have to learn something from one relay to the next and shooting the same caliber would also have to be beneficial. Some may disagree with this, but the rules do not prevent it. As a side to this, i know of a number of shooters that would like to shoot the two FClasses or even FB at the same event, but the rules and scoring duties by the competitor unfortunately make this an unlikely scenario. From a clubs financial viewpoint, shooting in multiple classes is a good thing aswell.

I can imagine some guys would not be impressed with me shooting one rifle in both classes, but it does have some merit.

First, I am getting more shooting value for my weekend, which is the number one driving factor.

Second, I think shooting the same rifle, same caliber, over two details would have a slight edge. You would be staying on top of the changing conditions, and when waiting for 3 details the conditions can be very different. If you are shooting twice in three details, well then you have slightly better knowledge of what to expect. Still, this doesnt matter on target.. you got to put the rounds down in th middle either way!

Third, if it was an issue, I could have two rifles built on the same components chambered in the same caliber, which then would be two rifles, but handling performance the same. But, then where is the difference from having just one rifle?

As for change of passion, I love my BR, but with limited matches, I can see myself out in the field doing a fair bit of long range hunting very soon. Also, I am wanting to record footage of this, so I'd imagine a fair bit of time will be invloved with this.

The biggest problem is the distance to short range BR matches where I am. Not at club level. I have a PPC and bugger all matches to enter in, unless I am wanting to drive a long bloody way.

500m Fly is my easiest competition to get too. You need 3 matches to be in the running for the SOTY, and I have 5 that I can get to farily easily. That is a good ratio for me, and that is why I have been shooting it. Although, this year I will be only able to make two matches, due to work.

So, one rifle dedicated to LR benchrest, 6mm of course, maybe a chambering change, and shoot the hell out of it. I am wanting to most likely put together another rifle, built on a Snort range BR stock as I like these better for some reason.

Stick with the Dasher or a 6X47L.... DASHER...

or will you be loading at the range??
cleaning in between relays?

40 rounds needed for each class, plus a couple for the warmer targets. So, 100 pieces of brass would be enough easily. I would not reload at the range. If shooting next day also (1000yds), I would reload at accomodation.

I would not clean for the full match two details.. yep about 90 rounds and not cleaning using a 6mmDasher. It seems this little case can go the distance without cleaning.

There would be enough time .........hopefully....

Yes, my work does suck a great deal for gettingt o matches, but then it does allow fun toys.. bit of a catch 22 scenario...

I really can see myself using the tactical style rifles out in the field a lot, and I really like shooting long range out bush. I can go during the week, or when ever I am free. I love my BR, and wont give it up, but I can see it going a little on the back burner......

Go for it AI----------- when I get my new Savage in 6.5 x 284, I'll probably do the same thing, just so I can run the barrel in.
You sure have got some nice rifles,so maybe this is the only way for you to shoot 'em
