. Well done really guys.Charlies big 338 Lapua is going to show a lot of potential and did very well on his first outing with it for most of the weekend. It is just a stretcher tube away from being a real threat and when he gets time i am sure the tube will get fitted along with the front and rear rail setup.
For some time now i have said that i have yet to see a 6.5 worth owning. Well Jaegens' is worth owning and he took out the score agg with a well shot 91. Tim Pavey came in second with a 89 and John McQuire did an outstanding job of managing a destabilising load that had all his shots sideways but still came in third for score with a 85.
Group was won by me with a 8.555" agg, Jaegen was a little unlucky with one card but still managed a very creditable 9.657" agg for second and Bob Luther came in third with a 14.690". I stated before the match that our 1K can be a graveyard, and it certainly proved true with the LGs getting a real hammering. The remaining shooters agging well into the high teens and low 20s. High score for one card was Alan Neilson with a well deserved 46.1 and small group was myself with a 6.380"
HG was a little different with some good groups and scores shot in trying conditions. I took out the group agg with a pair of near identical groups of 7.805" agg, second was JR with a 9.325" agg and third was Charlie with a 13.010" agg. Score was me on 193.3, then JR on 189.3 and then Shane Clancy for third with a 183.
Small group was JR with a very well run 7.050" and high score for one card was me with a 99.3 that took just over nine minutes to complete.
Just a quick rundown on some gear used; Jaegen used a 6.5/284 and 142 SMKs, Shane used a 7 STW and 180 Bergers, Charlie used a 338 Lapua and 250 Scenars shot out of his new 10x2 BAT, JR and i used the usual Redneck and Bibs or 200 SMKs for me with our ailing drop port magnums. Shane and Jaegen used sleeved 700s, Alan used an Omark and 175 SMKs in his 30 JAT, Bob Luther ran his trusty sleeved 700 and 30/284 with 175 SMKs. Bob Mulder used a 30 BR with 125 CDCs out of his Barnard, John Mc used a 7x47 and 130 SMKs fired from a 300 year old Mauser that clearly just wanted to rest all the time by putting bullets through the target sideways. Tim had his well serving Rem 700 30/06 AI and 155 Amax. Bob Noakes used a 284 and 168 SMK in his sleeved 700. Chris Joscht used his 6BR and 105 Scenars out of the sleeved 700.
The after shoot autopsy is for a number of changes amongst a number of our shooters choosing to move away from the Fly/1K rifle and rest combination to pure 1K/600 rifles in different stocks and muzzle breaks fitted. Calibers will surely change as our range mods have drastically altered the range characteristics with some very different wind effects that are giving us some unusual vertical. With my new LG it will be a drop port magnum action, stretched barrel and muzzle braked 300 Redneck or Ackley with either 200 SMKs or 208 Amax. When a HG firing 10 shots can out agg the LGs for both group and score average, the choice for me after this weekend has never been clearer. My ailing old HG barrel finished the weekend with 3415 rounds through the original chambering heading into the tail end of its fith season. All the more reason to go to a big banger LG.
