As I said the other day $500 would have been a great price however atleast the price is not bucketloads dearer than the krieger. I just hope the delivery time is as good as indicated. I wouldn't want to end up having to now wait a similar time to getting a krieger through.
Kenny,
Went with a mixture incorporating some of yours and Jeffs info and suggestions. Am planning on the thumbhole with a raised cheekpiece similar to the Baer. I'll try and get a picture of the template I made up here for you and anyone else interested to have a look at.

I know this is a "Lightgun on a budget thread", but have a look at these actions. They are budget compared to others.
Thinking of getting one myself.

I hate to see someone invest already enough for a budget rifle, but then for a little extra a custom action to use!
Cheers

Well this is what I came up with:
Nothing too fancy but creating the cheekpiece and thumbhole will be a good challange.
AI
I take it the 7500 would be the action of choice for what we are doing? What would the likely final cost be landed here? I've been told roughly double after exchange rate, freight and all other costs?
thanks Al

Are the Lawton Actions good???
Well, there is now 2 1000yd records being held by rifles built on these actions.
One in Heavygun and one in Lightgun. I only know about the lightgun record, Lawton 7500 action, lawton barrel (makes them too), shehane tracker in glass and the caliber, 6mm dasher. The group is a 3.841" for 10 shots. The Heavygun is a better again!
From what I have read, they are as good as any other action out there. That being BAT, Stiller, Kelby.. the lot!!
For the price and what you get, these are so god darn hard to pass up!! They are a true benchrest action!
For a price, yes I'd say double... and the 7500 action in 1.4" OD dual port would be my pick! $1500 landed for a full custom benchrest action.... sounds good to me!!!
The Predator sounds good, but the Lawton offers you more. fluted bolt, left or right ports or dual port, different OD's. The Predator is right bolt right port in 1.35" OD.. that all!!!
Cheers

Alan,
I reckon the stock looks good The thumbhole will be a challenge...but the cheekpiece will be a bit more I think, as ply is a bitch to shape nicely. I have only done 1...a Steyr copy and it was a nightmare
The costs would prolly go like this at an estimate-
$ for the action + 75 for export permit +5% for International orders +about 40 freight then convert to Aussie $ by dividing the total by the current rate. If customs get a bit narky they will sting you for GST on top. You will have to check the laws in your state as to wether the action has to go to a dealer...and find one willing to do it for you, he will want a few bucks for the work as well. Things may have changed so do some investigating before parting with your moola
AI,
just wondering how they feel is all........the records speak in volume just the same. That 7500 IS sweet
Sam,
Yep we are off topic...what do ya expect us to do.....be rude and not answer peoples posts...not me

No mate, there's no need for anyone to be rude or get offended. Forum etiquette says a new thread should be started rather than take a thread into a different subject.Kenny wrote:Sam,

I'm not suggesting that we be totally pedantic but in keeping with the spirit of this great thread , discussion on the merits of the various expensive custom actions should have it's own thread...

Sam,
Yeah mate I agree...it was just a quick discussion...a bit like a 'speedbump' rather than a 'detour' I guess and I am sure it's over
I am thinking now that the actions may be hard to source if all the people (and there must be a fair few) reading this topic go ahead with it all...so maybe an alternate action will be of benefit to those who cannot find one

You are missing the point...... I only brought this up because it is a budget custom benchrest action, and I was offering another alternative to the Omark.
These actions will come in more than $500 cheaper than the equivilant to any other maker out there.
Only once have I had a rifle built on a non custom action, but now, all mine will be. Resale will be increased dramatically, to the point where you'll get all your money back for the action if you were to sell it.
Yes the Omark will do the job... but at the end of the day it is still a Omark.
Baer stock is excellent, good match barrel, benchrest trigger, Nightforce scope and a Omark action. Here you've got all number one components, but are left with a Omark!!
Why not go that little extra further when your so close!!!!

The $$ difference between an Omark and a BR quality action will go a long way towards a Nightforce scope (which could be transplanted to another rifle).Ackley Improved wrote:

If I'm going to build a budget rifle it makes sense to me, plus if aJR reckons it will work fine that's another point in it's favour.
Now if I had few extra grand to spend then yeah I'd be looking seriously at the good gear in the action market. But I don't.
Plus I have some insane fishing around here and good fishing gear is not cheap
