Jethro,
MAB has reamers for 17/30Carbine and 22/30carbine (22Spitfire).
The 7.62x39 beget the 220Russian which began the PPC line.
I've often thought the 7.62x39, with less taper and a 0.308" projectile would make a nice short-range cartridge.
Cheers...

Hey All
Thanks for the input. Did a bit of research myself. The 17-30carbine (17 PeeWee) was probably one of the first 17cal wildcats to be made (source Ammoguide.com) unfortunately the .360 diameter case head size makes it hard to adapt to another action other than the 30 carbine. :x
I was actually looking at my options regards a 20-30 carbine driving the 32gners. still not sure what velocities it could achieve. :?
If I was going to build a .20 something on the 7.62x39 Id just use the .22 ppc case and save a lot of stuffing around. Just not sure which sized action I would need to build a PPC gun on.
MA303 thanks for the offer regards brass but Im still looking at options.
Has anybody seen an improved version of the 222 rem case?
Does anyone know who would have a reamer for a 20-222 improved or 20 vartarg turbo? :?:
Cheers Jethro.

Jethro,
Check with Shane as he caught me by surprise with the 416WSM  I believe he's using a combination of the base reamer and then neck/throaters to offer a few more wildcats then what is on his reamer list. Definately worth asking!
If you want a 30Carbine based wildcat, then go for it. I'm sure the bolt-head could be shimmed or something to make it viable.
Cheers...

Calhoon has a .19 caliber on the .30 carbine case, by all accounts, it's a nice little cartridge. He converts CZs to this one, and sells quite a few, he's located in Montana, though.......... that might be prohibitive for your purposes and pocketbook. He's also the only source for bullets, which keeps me from doing something :(

Jethro look here and you'll see how easy a 20PPC is to make.
http://www.6mmbr.com/20caliber.html

or you can short chamber a 204R to .223 brass length and use a cut down set of 204R dies

also look here for small cal info

That 6.8 spc case looks like it needs a 20 cal 50gn berger sitting in it. I believe it has already been wildcatted to 22 but cant remember the name. It looks similar to the 7.62x39

Hmmm :?
If only the budget was a little fatter Id treat myself to a new CZ in Hornet and work with that, as the bolt head size is .350 thou versus the carbine head size of .360. 10 thou aint much but Im not sure what problems the rimmed to rimless conversion would cause.
Ogre, the 20 PPC would certainly seem to be the best of the 20s as far as velocity and case design are concerned but once again case head diameter will limit the number of actions that are suitable. :x
Cheers Jethro

trevort,

The .30Rem, a rimless version of the 30/30 and parent case of the 6.8SPC, was 'catted to .224" by a US rifle builder named Bill Wylde back about 15 years or so ago, and named the Bartlett-Wylde 'Rat'...

The object of the exersize was to produce a more powerful cartridge to fit the AR15 / M16 rifles for NRA Service Rifle competitions, shot out to 600yds.

A very interesting little round the .22 BWR turned out to be, too...

Shortened to 45mm, the .30Rem brass is the same diameter as the 'dirty thirty' so case capacity is increased, from the .223's 31grs of water to the BWR's 38grs.
It sports the 30 degree shoulder of the 6mm PPC but, although sharper than the .223's 23 degree shoulder, apparently there are no feeding problems encountered with the conversion.
The bolt face must also be opened up, from the .223's .378", to the .30Rem's .422", a minor alteration for any of the .222 / .223
chambered rifles.

The resulting case is like a mini-.243 in appearance, with a case capacity similar to the .224 Weatherby, but without the belt!

It is also a capable performer in the field , where it will drive a 50gr nosler BT, or a 55gr LD from a 24" (61cm) barrel comfortably, powered by 29.5grs of BM2, 31grs of AR2208 or 33grs of W748.
With a fast twist barrel, it also pushes Sierras 69gr @3100fps, or the 80gr VLDs @ close to 3000fps.

...as Greg Matthews said in his "Gunsmith's Workbench" column, March '92, review of the cartridge in ASJ, "Any .22 cartridge which will equal a 22/250 with about 20% less powder must be efficient!"

I was playing with the idea of building a HB 'roo rifle in the caliber at the time, on a Mini 14 action, but due to the difficulty in obtaining / importing .30Rem brass at the time, ended up flagging the idea...

Now the 6.8SPC has come along, with supplies of brass even easier to form to .22BWR than .30Rem, but MAB have 'lost' their .22BWR reamer, in the recent change of ownership!

Sigh! I might have to contact Bill Wylde in the US for one...
