Re: Favourite calibre for foxes
Use 17Rem mostly, sometimes the 17HMR or 223 but a 25gr V-Max at near 4000fps for the 17 seems to do the job so well

Re: Favourite calibre for foxes
I voted .243 but would be just as happy with my .223 or even the HMR if that was all I had with me. I suspect when Shane gets done building my Tac20 it might get near the top of the list though.
Re: Favourite calibre for foxes
Ooops... I forgot one the most important calibres for foxes. Shit....Muttang wrote:You forgot .204............. Or are you a non believer?
OK, you guys that prefer the 204, just put it down in this thread.
Re: Favourite calibre for foxes
I think evryone has a different favourite now than they did a few years ago. So "now" would be the answer to your question.Rinso wrote:When skins were worth $45-50 I used a 17Rem, since skins lost value I use a 25.06 so which do you want the now or the then
cheers
Rinso
Can the 204 be added to this poll?

Re: Favourite calibre for foxes
90% of mine fall to the .223 and the rest would be shottie and .22lr and .17hmr last.
Re: Favourite calibre for foxes
338 works well on foxs. I went the 243 as even though i love my 204 the 243 really did blow em to bits.
Re: Favourite calibre for foxes
I went 222 as I dont own a 223 or 204 yet, and Im thinking of rebarrelling one of my mausers to 22/250, so my top one may be different soon. When I use the Whisper on them it might too. Probably taken most with a 22 magnum.

Re: Favourite calibre for foxes
I put down 243 as it is the only one on that list I own, although I have the 204
I still have not hammered a fox, I have seen them out under light but have just nailed bunnies so far, I love the 204 carnage and can only imagine what those 75 grain sierra hollow points I loaded up will do to a cute and fluffy.
I dropped a decent sized billy on the spot the other week with one of those 75 grainers so I rate them.

My favourite is the .17 rem for longer range, for short range my .22 mag does the trick.

Re: Favourite calibre for foxes
For me its the 22-250 only because it can shoot out to 350m, the hummer is much more fun, but limited to 150m
Re: Favourite calibre for foxes
.243win for me with 55 or 58gr slugs factory slugs. Am currently using Hornady 58gr Vmax mollys which do a lovely job. Have been using 55gr Winchester silver tips which also stop them in their tracks.
My actual rifle is a Target Grey Ruger M77 MKIIfitted with a 6x18 leupold scope and 26" barrel. Its a heavy sucker at about 10lb so rock solid when sitting on a rest.
Have also used a Brno .22 and a good old 12g shotty. Pretty rare to get close enough for the shotty, and the .22 doesn't have enough punch at 200m+ that most of our shots are at.
Have used a .17HMR but hate the sight of the fox running over the hill after the shot. Often they are hit but run too far afterwards so your never quite sure....Don't have that problem when they're shot with the .243.
