You could try a 243 Myra, aka 6mm/222 or 6 x 43. Designed by Arthur Langsfied in the 60s for use in L461s they were popular with roo shooters. There was also a 7mm version. I have a L461 in 300 Whisper, it was a 17 Remington.
Just to tempt you -a pic of 204 short cartridges.
Left is full length 204 ruger, next 223 with one pass in shortened 204 die-shoulder angle will increase slightly when fireformed, 204 short at 222 length, 222rimmed for comparisson.
Someone around here has done the 204/223, I have forgotten who, but it was on the old board.
Thanks again fellas that 222/204 looks the goods so what would you call it?What barrel length would be an ideal remembering it will mainly be used as spotlighting rifle /intro to centrefires for my family. Also what be the anticipated ballistics
the 222 necked down is called the 20Vartarg Turbo. I think changing the shoulder angle by using a shortened 204 die makes it slightly different. Dont know if there is a name for that one.
Don't think it has a name other than 204-150"short. How about 20CLF Cool Little Farker ?
The 20VTT (vartarg turbo) has 1.6" long case. 20VTT and 204 ruger both have 30* shoulder and approx. .200" long neck, shoulder diameter on both cases is .360"- wonder who copied who?
The 222 case is 1.7" long so you can exceed 20VTT ballistics.
Only info I have on 20VTT shows 35gn at 3800fps in 25" barrel. Do a search on 20VTT, you could start with 20VTT loading data.
HTH
If the barrel is good leave it as a .222 and load up some 40gn Noslers in front of Reloder 7 or AR 2207 . Will get close to 3500 FPS .
If that idea is no good but the .222 barrel is then I may be interested in buying it .
Sorry Bushchook ,Using 40 bkings in front of reloader 7 now.Mate it is not for sale at this time.think I will go with the 204clf and keep the sako barrel

204 perhaps. gee I bet you didnt see that coming.
At least then you could do an honest side by side comparrison of the 204 v 220.
I will be in the same position with my 223 once the 204 arrives. spoke to shane about opening the bolt face but he reckons its not worth it. This is with a sps rem though not a nice sako action.
If I do anything with it it might be to get it rebarreled to a 223AI or most likely it will sit in the safe to be used by Mel whenever she wants it.
Dr g
I’ve done the comparison and there really is none
The 220 in the paddock smokes the 204
