Guys--- I think you will find that the M77 Rugers with the tang safety were not designated "Mk1's". The fact that the later models were called Mk II's, most people assume ( there is that word again ) that the earlier models were MK 1's. They were called M77's.
But hell, they shoot Malcolm

You are right mate, the MkI has simply become the accepted method of identifying an early from recent model.

Those early Rugers have Douglas barrels -they shoot Norma 50 gr factory really well also. You don't see many for sale-most kept them in great shape.

I have heard a similar story regarding the early Rugers. Apparantely, Ruger approached a barrel manufacturer, to supply huge, bulk orders.
Someone told me it was Shilen-----------anyway, you are right, the bloody things shoot well.

bushchook wrote:Have an article from Nick Harvey somewhere entitled "The .220 Swift Rides Again". Was written in about '76 and made a big impression on me as a 15 year old . Was a test of the M77V which shot 0.5 MOA with the 52gn Hornady match HP in front of a compresssed load of 45gns IMR 4350 . Bought a Sako Swift in '80 and used that same load . Shot around half MOA in the Sako as well .
Love the Swift .
Bushchook I remeber that article is there any chance you send it through

To learn more on Ruger barrel history do a search on :

I had a second hand Ruger 77 HB .220 Swift that I'd cleaned and bedded.
This rifle shot 5 /100 into .3 with Norma 50 gr. factory consistantly at 3965 fps. I was doing some gunsmithing at that time and used this as a check rifle to see if customers could shoot. I sold it complete with Bonanza dies 100 fired Norma brass for $500 for a project . On hindsite quite a stupid move on my part.

The early barrels were made by Douglas for Ruger 77's and #1's and shot very well. Ruger at one time claimed that the .220 Swift was the most accurate caliber that they chambered. If you find one -clean it properly and treasure it.

If you can tell me the year/month I can scan it.

I have the SSAA Magazine going back to 1986 or thereabouts.

Nah  ... have the work laptop with me so I checked, it's just not hooked up to send stuff until I'm back home and no USB to transfer files at the moment. Off memory, I thought it was 1992 when the article ran.
