224 pill good for 5000+fps??
224 pill good for 5000+fps??
Hi guys, a mate (walking_death) and I are trying to develop a decent load in our 300wm and 300RUM rifles for a shot at the "bunny explosion comp." and for the just plain fun of it. The problem we are having is with the projectiles. We have been using various weight nosler BT's in .224 cal with good results up to about 4900fps. But after this velocity they seem to be breaking into 2 or more pieces as they leave the muzzle. I have had consistent velocity readings of 5150 from the 300RUM but again with bullet failure. When adding anymore powder to this load the chrony simply displays an error and the bullets cease to exist at all. I'm also trying to crack the 1 mile per second barrier too, again just for the fun of it but I may have to use a fmj to acheive this. My question is does anybody know of an expanding projectile that may be able to handle velocities in excess of 5000fps.
I'm hoping to get this worked out and get some video footage of a hit on a bunny or something similar.
Cheers Brett

I'm missing something here. You are shooting 30 cal rifles, but using .224 Nosler BTs? Unless you happen to be using some sort of sabot, I'd have to say you're heavily into the red wine.
Use a solid copper bullet. Shove as much powder as you can get in the the magnum case, and remotely fire the rifle. You will end up with good video footage, but perhaps not of a bunny hit.

Yeah sorry, using sabots. And unfortunatly red wine and me don't get on anymore. Bummer that.jb747 wrote:I'm missing something here. You are shooting 30 cal rifles, but using .224 Nosler BTs? Unless you happen to be using some sort of sabot, I'd have to say you're heavily into the red wine.

And yes the 300wm load is already a FULL case of 748 but pressures are still ok. Need a faster powder again. But again looking for an expander.
Yeah the 300wm might be getting close to max but could benifit from a faster or more dense powder. We've gone 8 grns on top of the 5150fps load in the 300RUM with no drastic pressure signs yet. But as I say the pills are completely coming apart at that speed. Trouble with 110 Vmax is it comes apart real early in the piece, 3600 - 3700fps. The 130 speer HP gets 3750 from the win mag but slightly less from the 300RUM before it comes apart. The only light 30cal pill of any use so far is the 125gr BT. It does 3800 out of the winmag and 4100 from the RUM but it is not a varmint pill and not that explosive on furry critters. Bloody brilliant on hairy critters though!! The bottom line is we can't get above 5000fps with an intact projectile in either calibre yet even though we have more velocity potential in both.jb747 wrote:Unfortunately, I think you probably need a slower powder, and a much longer barrel. You must be right on the ragged edge of what is possible (as opposed to practical).
And it would never have even near the same splatter effect as a 110 Vmax from the same rifle.....
Shooting sabots. Only the powder errosion to worry about. Bugger all wear from the projectile. Running less powder weight than my regular 125/130 grn loads (112grs 2213SC). Just a damn sight faster powder.kjd wrote:LoL Have fun in shortly selecting your new barrel!

LoL, I thought the majority of throat erosion was from powder and not the bullet???300RUM wrote:Shooting sabots. Only the powder errosion to worry about. Bugger all wear from the projectile. You're no doubt right in that regard. But like I say I use less powder than my regular loads with the sabots. And these sabots are not intended as regular loads. More of an experiment and to see how big I can blow up a critter! Big I hope!LoL, I thought the majority of throat erosion was from powder and not the bullet???
It's the rotational speed of the projectile that causes them to let go, not the directional velocity, So, to go faster without disintergrating, the bullet has to spin less, use a barrel with a slower twist and the point where speed and spin get to the "let go" point will be moved further out!!
