The HW80 Is a gas ram AR and is a bitch to cock.(I think).
Why not try a R9.
Sweet rifle and very capable.
how old is your young bloke ??
Most of the upper scale AR's are 30-35 lb cocking effort.
Regards
How much are the R9's?

Are the Beeman's a quality rig like the Weihrauch's. Not being smart here, just don't know about them.

Just turned 12, but not that strong.

THe Beeman R9 is made by Weihrauch and shares the same quality and trigger etc. It's smaller, lighter and a better choice for a junior.
They sell for $695.At 12,he may be a bit little but by 14/15 I reckon he'll be fine.

The 85 seems to be a bit lighter. Can these be sourced?
He luved the 35 on this shoulder, balanced for him superbly. Think any more weight might be a bit much.

Also never been a second-hand rifle man  . What are these worth new Lewis?

THe HW85 is still available from Weihrauch but we don't sell them. The R9 is essentially the HW95.Same internals as the HW85 but with scope grooves cut into the receiver instead of a screw on rail.THe R9 is a lot cheaper than the HW85.We used the sell the R10 years ago which was basically the high power US version of the HW85.They were R!/HW80 pricing.
A new R1 is $995.
Second hand is no risk with me.

Not being a second hand man will handicap you if you are on a budget.
you can be assured that if you purchase a AR from lewis and it is not up to your expectations it will be rectified in an instant.
As I said before -Lewis is the only dealer In OZ that stands by his sales 110%, no questions asked.!!!!
My advice is that if you want to buy new and have the cash go ahead.
If you are after something that is a bit out of reach new then see lewis and see what he can supply, If he sais its like new condition IT IS.!!!!
Whatever your budget is ,spend a bit more and in the long run ,you will be better off.
these AR can be handed down to your family-They are that good.
Regards.

As luck has it, I'm not on a budget. But that's not saying I want to spend huge $$$$ on my son's first AR? Maybe I should just buy once & buy great :?

ATM I'm spending around $600. Maybe I need to add another couple of hundred & go the next step?

That's the difference between new .20 & .22 cal. Always thought the .22 was the ONE.

The R1 looks like serious mumbo  . They under the grand mark?

The R7 is closest to the HW30S,a junior rifle. It is a superb little airgun but not powerful enough for anything beyond sparrows.

Honestly-I have not looked into the smaller AR.
Most blokes look into the R9 or R1.
The .20 cal is a new kid on the block to say so but has a big following in the US.
It basically comes down to what you want to spend but spend once and cry once.
Wish you were up here so you could come and try.
Lewis is your man-If he says its good it IS.
Think about it for a few weeks and do some research and then spend the coin, its a sound investment and one that will give for years to come.
1 gunwill not cover everything and you will require more.
Have you looked into the HW77-97 market, they are top shelf equipment as well.

How do those under-levers hold up over the years?
I've shouldered the 97K, it was sweet  . Shorter barrels work okay?
